Pre-heat hot water valve

I saw this at RVtravel.com - http://www.rvboondockingnews.com/201...ot-so-hot.html

Made me think of this - http://www.altenergymag.com/emagazin...le=recirculate

I am not near my trailer at the moment and can't picture how/if this could work in my trailer. I have been thinking about installing it in my house because our guest bathroom is pretty far from the hot water heater and takes a few minutes to reach the shower in there.

We had a re-circulation pump installed in our 'stick' house after an in-slab hot water line running to the master bathroom began leaking down through the slab. The old lines in the slab were disconnected and new hot and cold lines were run through the attic (the only economically feasible alternative).

A third line was installed in the attic running from near the end of hot water line back to the cold water inlet of the water heater. This third line has a small re-circulation pump at the water heater, taking water from the third line and pumping back into the water heater.

Our home water heater is near the kitchen (and the coffee maker!) so in the morning we turn on a timer connected to the re-circulation pump, get a cup of coffee, and head back to the bedroom for a shower. Less than 5 min the water at the bathroom is hot. After 10 min the pump shuts off.

With the third line, we only needed the additional line, pump, and timer. No other valves etc. were necessary. I don't have my trailer yet, but adding a line back to the fresh water tank and a manual valve (probably under the bathroom sink) seems like a reasonably easy mod to save water.

Just thought of another angle... By having a manual valve in the line between the hot water line and the fresh water tank, it could be left partially open while showering. Then the temp of the water in the shower would not change as much when saving water by shutting off & restarting the flow of water when taking a shower.

We use this at home: http://www.chilipepperapp.com/ It does the job and has served us great for years.

God forbid I ever have a camper big enough to need one.

The problem with those systems is that they return the water back to the hot water tank through the cold water line. There is a sensor in the cross connect valve that shuts off the flow at 95 degrees. This means that your cold water line will have warm water up to 95 degrees in it. If you mix hot and cold water for a shower then you will constantly have to adjust the hot and cold valve as the warm cold water is depleted. Or if someone uses the cold water in between the remote location and the tank to get a drink they will get lukewarm water.

Not really. We have used it and found it completely satisfactory. Reduced water and power bill.
