tlhdoc front Hybrid storage - best mod ever!!!
I think "tlhdoc" was the first in this thread: http://www.jaycoowners.com/showthread.php?t=1516 to do this mod, but if I could vote for the best mod ever this would be it!
I saw this and just had to do this myself. I'd love to tell other hybrid owners with the same setup in the front as my X19H that all you have to do is "pry up a board and add a hinge" but the mod is not quite that easy. It does require some thinking and some additional work to ensure everything is still strong and there are no sharp screws left poking out in there.
In fact, I was amazed at the screws sticking in there. glad I didn't try to shove anything soft and valuable through the outside storage door!
Yes, there are water lines and electrical in there (I actually improved the electrical layout with cable clamps). The feeders for the right fwd marker light hung down in front of the outside storage door so were at risk every time I put my x-chocks away etc.
I tried to include some pictures to show that the mod doesn't negatively impact the appearance of the trailer, but GREATLY enhances the available storage in the front and access to it. Yes, I will mainly keep softer lighter stuff in there but that opens so many other areas for all my tiki stuff and awning lights and flamingos etc!!!
Love this mod - thanks so much tlhdoc for paving the way for us...sheer brilliance if you ask me!

Actually, I did the mod first. My good friend tlhdoc posted it first. Thank you for the compliment though. I rather like it myself. If you check out "my mods so far" I also did in front of the back bed and above it. I think that I have found every free square inch in my camper.

I did this as well. I too was surprised at the exposed wood screws (sharp end). I simply clipped them off with a pair of very sturdy electrical pliars. This is a great mod and Jayco should just build this into the hybrids.

Mark, thank you for the compliment. MyToys pried the board off first and used Velcro to hold the board in place. I modded her mod by adding the piano hinge and skipping the Velcro.

I thought about this but I am afraid it will void the warranty?

Well, I look at it this way; my Jeep is lifted and my dealer is big into offroad as part of their sales. I broke an upper ball joint and they $3000 in warranty work to fix it all.
If my Jayco dealer will not support me and do warranty work that is not a direct result of a mod, then I need to find a new dealer. No, I haven't discussed the mods specifically with them so true enough, I don't know for sure and hopefully won't have to find out any time soon.

To void the warranty they have to PROVE that it caused the problem.

Have you guys who did this checked the tongue weight or do you unload that extra compartment when towing?
The X19H has a pretty heavy tongue as it comes from the factory. I keep on looking for ways to move weight back. My tongue weight is > 15% with the trailer unloaded.

I keep the same amount of stuff in there I would without the mod. It is just so much easier to get to.

Yes - on CAT scales.

This mod does not make an extra compartment, it just makes it easier to get things in and out of that storage area.
I also weighed my trailer on a CAT scale. No appreciable difference in the weight. The things that I keep in there are light weight. The only thing I put in there now, that I didn't put in there before, are the dinette back rest cushions. The dinette seats were too shallow for me. So I put the back rest cushions in the "front trunk". I have them if the table is used as a bed, but they are out of the way the rest of the time.

Thanks Mark - just bought a 23b. Noticed this same issue on front pass-through storage and thought it was a big waste of space. When you say that you pryed open the bunk end board, is that really how it works, or do you need to unscrew anything in order to get access?
Thanks

I don't know on your trailer, but I literately pried the board up. I took my time and moved the pry bar to different spots so I did not damage the board. I am still working on something to hold the board open when I am putting things in and out of there. A haven't found a gas strut that would work, and I am thinking of using a short board on a hinge. One that I could just swing up and have it support the board. Maybe two of them.

tlhdoc-- I did the" board on a hindge" trick . Most of the time the weight of the mattress holds it open. Larry

I just lift the board and the mattress goes up with the board. That is when I need something to hold the board open.
