Must Knows for a rookie

I did it. I made the plunge on a super well kept 1993 Jayco 300 FS Eagle. I know enough to have checked for water leaks etc all that checks out well. So pour out your wisdom. I did help winterize a friends trailer a year ago but that's all the experience I have. Help!

First things first...read the manual. If you didn't get one, they are available online. Of course each appliance has it's own. Happy rving.

I was very disappointed with the manual(s). Generalized information with little detail and has yet to help me answer questions I've come across.

This forum is far more useful.

YouTube is the best. There are a lot of videos for beginners - I know because I am one! I was able to find a video that went over my exact trailer and how all it's systems worked. I'd imagine it will be harder to find videos for older models, but I bet you can find something. Just search "rv basics" or the like.

Congratulations and happy camping.

There is a lot to know, do you have specific questions? I don't know that I could even think of everything to tell you over the internet...

Well since you asked...
First question is very specific to mtrailer. The VIN sticker is mostly illegible.
I need the empty and gross weights (their definitions) for my state registratipn . Looked through cabinets frame tongue and manual. Been googling it for hours no luck. Ideas how to find that?

Second question is the trailer has brakes but no battery came with it. What size do I need. 30' trailer duel axle.

Easiest way to get empty weight without a printed number would be to hit a cat scale. If I had to guess gross weight I'd probably just use max load of the tire times 4 or 2, depending on how many tires you have. Did you check the axles for a sticker?

Most trailers come with a group 24 deep cycle battery. You may want to upgrade if you will be doing a lot of dry camping. Check out the boondocking section.

I seem to recall reading that the VIN is stamped on the frame someplace. My guess would be on the tongue but exactly where I don't have a clue.

Get the VIN number off the Title or previous owner's registration, then contact Jayco directly with the VIN and they may be able to help you with the weights.

Most TT's are supplied with a Group 24, Wet cell, 12V, RV/Marine battery (not a true deep cycle battery). If the plastic battery box is missing, you can get one at Wallmart, Auto Parts stores, etc., for around $15.

Since you and I have the same trailer, what problems are you experiencing? I have not found any problems with mine so far that I could not figure out.

Group 27 is what is recommended with mine according to the owners's manual, just found out recently that the dealer installed a group 24 when I took delivery over 2 yrs ago....I am taking it back to them to either get a correct battery, hopefully they will honour their mistake.

Traveling and camping is going to open up a whole new world for you.

I would like to suggest that you take a hard look at your tires. Check the DOT date. Depending on age they may need to be replaced.

So true. But that is the way they all are anymore, have you bought a car or truck, lately?

Yes, I have seen the "Group 27 Deep Cycle" battery referenced in recent years, but in most cases to get a "true" Deep Cycle battery (any Group size) it's a cost upgrade from the standard Group 24 "Marine/RV Deep Cycle" battery that many RV dealers provide, commonly referred to as a "combination battery" (also rated for starting).

I would be interested in hearing how your dealer interprets the "Group 27 Deep Cycle" reference in the owners manual.

The most important tip for a beginner is to check the clamps on the drain hose every time before draining the blackwater tank. You do not want the hose slipping off as the weight of the waste hits the hose. Believe me I made that mistake once after a week long boondocking trip. You do not want that to happen.

Be sure to let us know how that goes.

If I recall the same reference you found mentioning a group 27 is also very clear to point out "Customer Supplied" not factory supplied of dealer supplied.

I would not get my hopes up that the dealer will do anything for you 2 years later. Nor would I suggest you make a big deal of it, just remember for next time. a single Group 24 RV/Marine battery seems to be the standard. Its what my first RV came with, and it worked great for nearly 2 years.

Just learning curve stuff for someone who just bought his first modern trailer. For example...

Why doesn't the water tank fill when I connect the city water hose? Forum 1, manual 0

How do you get antifreeze into the water system when the manuals instruction of putting your outside hose in a jug of antifreeze and turning on the water pump doesn't work? Forum 2, manual 0

Why do I have no power in the trailer when the battery is fully charged? Forum 3, manual 0.

Stuff like that.
