Camped in Louisiana on the Gulf Coast once... Woke up with hundreds of them crawling on me.

I have had good luck at our permanent "mobile home" with 20 Mule Team Borax spread as dust inside the doors so bugs will crawl across and die over the summer.

Inside, I found Terro was handy but I have made bait from 20 mule team and honey, just stirred it up and dripped on a piece of thin cardboard and placed near the ant trail for sugar ants. Takes 2 to 4 days to kill the nest.

For camping we take TERRO T1812 Outdoor Liquid Ant Killer Bait Stakes - 8 Count (0.25 oz each). These are nice because you don't have to re-apply after rain. They also work outside when we have carpenter ants attack wood around the outside of the house. You can re-tape the hole if you are careful and take them with you. Nothing toxic to dogs, cats or kids.

I use food grade diatomaceous earth. I have wiped out entire colonies with just one application of this stuff. It has the look, feel, and consistency of flour. It's ground up corral extremely fine. Under a microscope it appears like little shards of glass. It gets into their exoskeleton joints and ruptures it and they bleed out.
I'm a landlord, and this stuff always works for me when the tenants complain of ants. It's harmless to mammals. One weakness of it is that it's becomes worthless if it gets wet. I get mine on amazon.
