Coupler Problem

Our Eagle's coupler was not opened for the first year due to the type of WD hitch we had. We now have an Equalizer, so I need to drop it on the ball and take it off. But the "lip" that slides under the ball will not retract when the lever is lifted. I have to go at it with a screwdriver from the underside. I can take a pressure washer to it, thinking it might be gumed up. But if that doesn't work, is there a fix for this problem? It looks to be this type. http://autoplicity.com/products/5639...FalgTAod8DxWLQ

The only things I can think of is ether gumed up , bent, or jammed I had one on a utility trailer that was jammed had to get a pry bar to get it to release but did have to replace the coupler.

Spray it down with WD-40 and work it, if it's not bent you should be able to get it moveing freely.

Craig get some brake cleaner and spray it down good, Then work the latch, when it starts working good spray some lub on the latch and work it in. I also put a little grease on the lip and some more around the moving parts on the latch. It may take awhile to get to work but the more you use it the better it will be. Later Ernie

Is it frozen in the "locked" position and you can't get it to open? Or it opens but only when you pry it with a screwdriver?

If it's frozen, I would assume it's just a little rust that needs to be removed.

If it moves freely but only when pried with a screwdriver then it seems as if the linkage between the handle/lock on top of the hitch has broken off of the mechanism under the coupler.

I've been using something called Mystery Oil since I was a little kid. It used to come in a red can but I think they've now switched to a plastic bottle. The stuff is amazing... it's a penetrating oil that you just apply liberally, leave for a while, and try again. Plus it smells wonderful.

PB blaster is great for loosening up a coupler. I had a Coachmen chassis that had its coupler closed for 24 years. Sprayed some PB on it, and let it set (good time for a lunch break),came back and it opened right up! It doesn't take a lot on it, but last summer I used an entire can freeing up stuff that had sat for 20+ years.

Clean it with carb or brake cleaner to remove all the old "gunk". Follow that with PB Blaster. Use a suitable pressing tool and prying implement (hammer/screwdriver) to get it loosened up. Once it is moving I like a white lithium spray grease to keep it free.
When my hitch looks a little dirty I clean with carb cleaner and reapply the grease.
Just my $0.02, your mileage may vary.....
