started out with a 6 1/2 ft bed in a GMC, now I have a 8 ft bed in a Dodge and I can carry my motorcycle or full sheets of plywood! I like the 8 ft box except when trying to find a parallel parking spot I can fit into.

The deciding factor for us in going with a 6.5 foot bed (vs 5.5 short) in our F-150 was and additional 50% fuel tank capacity in the 6.5 bed. Not sure if there is any difference in the Dodge fuel capacities.

So like you guys said, there probably won't be any difference in towing the trailer. The 6.4' is rated to tow a few hundred lbs less so I'm leaning 5.7'.
Thanks again for all the responses.
I have a 2014 Ram Ecodeisel crew cab 4x4 6.4 bed this will have the longest wheel base, 3.55 ratio has 1000 lbs less towing then the 3.92 ratio .
I have the 3.55 and with 600 lbs in the truck " passenger's gear ect," I have a payload "hitch weight " of 784 lbs and towing of 6988 lbs to be 100 % legal, when I get my 28 dbsh I will real close with the weight , now with the 3.92 gears I would have extra cushion , I saw a guy on the ecodeisel forum that has a 8000 lb dry weight trailer probably an easy 9000lbs when loaded for his truck and he is very over weight .
you will love this truck great fuel mileage, i just wish they upgraded the amount towed because it can pull the weight fine , it's just that dam sticker on the door that say's your over weight

Spur,

This is the debate I'm currently having. I have the truck below. My payload is a little less than 1400 lbs. The GVWR is only 7350. This IS the problem with a half ton. You run out of payload and RAWR (4050 for mine) before you run out of towing. If you plan to grow you will be over. If you are fine running over loaded then have at it. The Ford Ecoboost and HD payload will get you more than the Ecodiesel. Don't let the 28 MPG get you all excited. While I haven't read any real world numbers, they are never as good as posted. I'm looking at the 2500 with the 6.4 Hemi. Not sure about Megacab and 6 ft bed or CC with 8 ft bed? I have filled my 6.5 ft bed many times and would like more room. So, I'm still debating.

If I didn't drive almost 30,000 miles a year I would have got a 2500 diesel.
I do average between 25 to 26 mpg per tank city/highway , one time I did 500 miles of highway on a 700 mile tank and averaged 28 mpg " empty truck " If you go with a 2500 definitely get the diesel upgrade , just in resale its worth it let lone power when towing anything over 7000lbs
The dry weight of the 28dbsh I am looking at is 5460 + 300 for battery and gas ect , That will leave me 1200 lbs of cargo for 3 people I think I will be way under that # but it will be close either way . The wife wanted the 3220 and that I will definitely be over weight on . it's all a catch -22 , just depend on what you use your truck for 95% of the time if it's worth the bigger truck with less fuel mileage, I also have a 3500 dully duramax that pulls 10,000 every day with ease " not even breaking a sweat " one day it broke down and I used my ecodiesel for work and it did the job , but I would never wanna run that type of weight every day in a 1/2 ton

They do have that option -- it's the 2500 :-)

You wouldn't expect any of the big three to canabalize their 2500/3500 sales by building a 1500 series with a diesel and 2500lb payload option, would you?

A lot depends on how you use your truck and what you haul. But one other consideration when choosing truck bed length could be where you live and work. Here in rural Colorado so many people have large SUVs and 8-foot bed trucks and duallys that most parking lots are striped for them. And there isn't a lot of big city driving, maybe because we don't have any big cities. (Denver doesn't count 'cause it's really in its own world, maybe even in Wyoming. That's where Boulder really is.)

We took our dually to D.C./Maryland a few years back and it was a pain to park anywhere. Spaces were mostly too narrow and too short.

Glad to hear you are really getting that mileage. I have never gotten "rated" mileage on any car or truck I have ever had.

And yep, it's hard to balance the towing vs every day driving and get the best balance. I only drive about 4 miles one way to work, which is why I'm looking at the 6.4 Hemi.

diesel's get great mileage, I have had 2 VW jetta's TDI also and they both got over 40mpg on average per tank " They claimed 38 highway I was getting 47 to 48 highway " . It seem's like when they rate a diesel mpg it is always rite on or you get better then what they claim , Now gas motor's I have never got what they claimed
