But this is what you said. Again, speed isn't the only factor in safety. That is the point I am trying to make. People like to throw speed out like it is the end all, be all of safety and collision avoidance... its not. Driving slow with your head up your rear end isn't any safer than driving fast with your head up your rear end. Pulling your head outta your rear end is the first step towards safer driving.

I play a little game on trips. I take note of the vehicles that fly by me, especially motor homes and those towing travel trailers. I've seen a great number of them pass me more than once throughout a day, even in a 3 or 4 hour period. Several times I've pulled into a campground only to be right behind one of these just getting out of their vehicle. It's sort of funny, the argument given for running at faster speeds is because they get bored on the road or want to pop open a beer faster. Yet I'd be willing to bet that most save very little time by driving faster. An hour? Maybe. Maybe not.

My dad drove truck over the road. He taught me that it really doesn't matter if you do 60 or 80. Rule of thumb is 2 hours for every 100 miles. And whether I tow my trailer and run 60 on a long trip, or just drive the car and run 75, I've found that rule to be fairly accurate.

See, and I just always thought there was a time warp between me and my destination. It just seems like no matter what speed I drive, it takes the same amount of time to get there. It defies all logic!

Maybe. Regardless, like I said, I'd be willing to be that most people that fly down the road don't make it to their destination with any great margin of time.

Passing more than one time a day, so true. My father pointed out to me when I was maybe ten years old that most of the drivers that passed him, a pro driver, weren't making better time than him because they really didn't know the ropes. Sure enough, we counted three cars that passed us twice that day. There's more to his lesson, but that's the jist of it.

And when I read this statement I knew the discussion was over: "Your argument seemed to be that excessive speed was unsafe. I disagree."
