1999 Jayco Eagle 285BHS Rebuild

This will be my thread for documenting the rebuild on my fifth wheel.

Quick summary, I bought this for $800 and it had suffered significant water damage to the front and rear walls and some roofing. We suspect that the front and rear caps were installed over the previous rubber roof incorrectly.

The previous owner started the repair (notice below the condition in which I received it). The camper came with a new roof, glue, 12 sheets of Luan, plywood, and all siding/moldings labeled for (hopefully) easier re-installation.

I'll have to upload pics later when I'm on my laptop.

Latest progress, found out that the back corner was really bad and even required some floor replacement under the bunks. its getting there but this whole day was very windy and scattered showers so i didn't get as far as i wanted.

And this is why I'm glad i own my house and live alone haha

Best of luck. At least you have a helper there. Keep us posted with the rebuild progress.

Welcome to JOF

Look forward to following you FW rebuild and viewing your pics. No two rebuilds are alike, so there is always something interesting to learn or see.

I have started re-framing the rear wall/corner. Here is the rear corner post where i made it out of one piece of treated 2x8 instead of the multiple pieces used before. its much sturdier than even the opposite corner which is still intact.

Here is the bathroom ceiling, luckily it all looks good.

Started getting the back frame back on. Wiring will be very fun i'm sure.

Wow, what a project. I can only guess you are really handy with woodworking. You need to get that helper busy though to cut down on the time involved!
Good luck with all of this and keep the pictures coming.

So, back in the late 90's was a rubber roof an option? Our 97 we have now and the 99 we sold earlier this summer are both steel (aluminum) roofs. I personally prefer the steel vs rubber for this very reason. Would it be possible to put on a steel roof on a newer rv, espicially if you were doing a project this involved?

I'm kind of all around handy and refuse to pay someone to do a job that i can do myself even if its takes twice as long. Plus it would probably be cheaper to buy a new camper than to pay someone to do this much work.

I couldn't imagine the cost difference to put new aluminum sheeting on a roof plus it would be very difficult to do as it would have to be one big roll because of seams. I can't get the rubber roof onto the rv by myself its already so heavy. Plus i would think aluminum would be tough to work with on corners and edges.

Well i've gotten the rear siding back on, not everything fit back exactly as i'd like but thats okay they werent hard fixes.

Notice that the siding on the side versus the back doesn't match up. I'm starting to think there was plywood or paneling on the back wall before i got it. Not a big deal as i'm just going to take a cutoff wheel and trim it up.

Here is the rear wall and passenger corner. Yes it needs a very thorough cleaning

Well its getting closer, finally got around to getting roof glued on but the glue that it came with was some asphalt roll roofing adhesive, (tar basically). No one stocks the Dicor so I i couldn't actually get it on, found a mobile repair guy and he has some so hopefully tonight it'll go on. Though it would be nice to use the shop it was in over the weekend but oh well.

Here's the only pic i got from weekend.
