Winegard Antenna Water Leak, and Fix

So we were camping this weekend, in torrential downpours and my DW is at the dinette and gets dripped on. After much searching we found that the antenna is very loose in its rotational movement. And if wiggled properly the dripping inside gets worse. Looking for guidance and advice on these antennas. I found the manual for the antenna and it appears there is an o-ring in there that I can replace. Calling CW in the morning, as they are the closest authorized dealer in my area.

We were on park cable, so the antenna was in the down position. I covered the rotational area with duct tape and it stopped leaking for the rest of the weekend.

Will post more as I get into this and what I find.

There are several seals and rings in the antenna. The owners manual recommends lubrication several times a year.

Yea, I saw that Threebutchers. We bought it used, so no telling if it has ever been done. Going to try to get the seals ordered and go from there. It will be done from here forward though...

Ordered the parts from Amazon. 1/2 the price CW wanted... Parts should be here Wednesday. No rain in the forecast until Friday. Looks like I have my project for the week.

Let's hope I get this right... I got a few pictures of the parts, but missed while we were working, running low on daylight due to a tool run.

Tools used:
Needle nose pliers
Channel lock pliers
15/16" deep socket with thin wall thickness
Associated ratchet and an extension
Cut off wheel on grinder
3/32" hex wrench (for handle removal)

The worm gear and shaft are all sold in one length, long. So you have to cut the new one to the length of your old one. I used my grinder with a cut off wheel, a hack saw would probably have worked.

The old worm gear and shaft.

The washers and o-ring for the worm gear shaft

Gear housing from the bottom.

The nut and seals for the gear housing. Notice that the black o-ring had rolled. This is where my leak was. Upon re-assembly with the new parts, we lubricated this extremely well with the silicone spray and put it together slowly and carefully so as not to roll it again.

It worked best with 2 people, one on the roof, one inside the camper. It can be done alone, but that would be a lot of trips up and down the ladder. My problem was that my 15/16" socket had very thick walls. I had to make a parts store run to get a new one with much thinner walls to fit up inside the hole to get the nut off the bottom of the gear housing.

We had some pretty hard rains and hail last night with the storms rolling through here. Happy to report that the antenna leak repair has worked. No more drips from the handle. WOOHOO!!!

Some info on the Winegard crank-up Sat. Dish............ when mounting the base to the roof make sure that the little black tube is laid as shown in the installation instructions.
The outside end of the tube should be pointed to the rear, flat on the roof and not covered with sealant on the end. That tube is the drain for the water that runs down the shaft and into the base which is shaped like a dish and will trap water. The water would rise up and then run down the shaft and drip off of the crank handle inside the RV. In my case it dripped on my wife's side of the bed. Not good.
It was originally installed by a "nimrod" at the Fife, Wash. Camping World.
All FYI. Hope it helps.
