Rear Kitchen "bounce"

I recently went to (and also came out of) a CG in Southern New Mexico that had a 9 mile gravel and dirt road that was such a "washboard" that I could only go 10 mph most of the way. A couple times the TV and rig actually started to go sideways due to the bumps. So upon arrival I thought I would be in BIG trouble with all the "stuff" in the rear kitchen. Not so. Everything traveled just fine. The only problems I had were the things faling out of the medicine cabinet in the bathroom, which is toward the front of the 5er. So...I can't speak for all rear kitchen 5ers but mine travels just fine .

We are thinking of a trip to Alaska and are worried about things shaking when traveling on some of the gravel roads.

Many years ago, we had a fifth wheel (not a Jayco) with a rear kitchen. Everything that could possibly break did break even though we were traveling on interstate and state highways that were relatively smooth. We swore that we would never have a rear kitchen again. However, many years later, we did purchase a Jayco with a rear kitchen and the results were completely opposite of the first camper. Never had a problem with breakage in the Jayco. I really feel that is one testament of the quality of manufacturing in a Jayco.

Our first camper (not a Jayco) was a rear bedroom model, with the closet at the very back. We couldn't hang anything in that closet. Every time we traveled, anything hung in the closet would be in a heap at the bottom of the closet. We had to just lay all of our clothes on the bed and hang them in the closet when we arrived wherever we were going. We vowed that we'd never have that arrangement again.

Our new Jayco (our second camper) is a fifth wheel with rear living room/entertainment. This works much better. I did learn one thing on my first trip, though. The shelves in the cabinet on the rear entertainment wall are not stout enough to hold a case of beer on the highway. I paid the dealer to repair the damaged shelf, and I'll find another place to carry the extra beer, probably in the basement.

For some reason, this brought back a very vivid memory from my child hood. It involves a PUP, a case of Shasta, and my dad driving too fast on a washboard road. We found sticky spots for nearly a year offer that.

Glad to hear you didn't have a problem, since my new Eagle 266RKS has a rear kitchen. I read on another blog about cabinet doors flying open, stuff all over the floor, etc. with rear kitchen models. Someone else on that blog said it had largely been eliminated by the wide-spread axles and better springs on most newer trailers. I used to have a rear closet on my old trailer (also not a Jayco), and found the same thing as etex211. Ended up buying a couple packs of special "narrow hook" hangers from CW. I guess I'll find out about the "rear kitchen bounce" if the Michigan weather ever clears enough to get it out of storage.

We had few issues with the rear kitchen in our 2011 31RKS. The only time anything was out of place is when I hit a "hidden" bump on the road and a fridge shelf fell off. We did however have some rear sway with this unit under windy conditions. We would always load the front with everything that would fit there. We have since sold this unit and are planning to order a Jayco HT 27.5 RLTS.

Just wondering if adding shock absorbers would help the bouncy kitchen in my 2012 Eagle 31RKS? Anyone have experience with this? or would a different hitch pin help?

I have had 2 rear kitchen fifth wheels and 1 mid kitchen model. We had a few problems with all of them. Nothing that could not be resolved by placing enough in the cabinet to prevent movement. We used small bungees and child cabinet restraints to keep the rear doors closed and secure. Jaycos cabinet doors on our newer rig are much more secure.

Remember, you are moving down the road at 65 mph or faster. Things move around.

Had a friend that several years ago that was coming home from Florida on interstate 75 and when he got home all the rear cabinets were on the floor with broken China everywhere. The problem was his DW had loaded the cabinets with the heavy China and can goods . Lesson learned

We arrive at a CG once, opened the slide and found a Tupperware container of sugar open on the floor.
It hit right over a heat vent. What a mess.
