Group 24 Vs Group 27 Battery ?

I have a question about my battery, when we picked up our new trailer the dealer put a group 24 size battery on it. Jayco says to use a group 27 battery only, in fact the last three trailers we owned had a group 24 battery on them.

Here is my question, does it really matter? We always camp where they have electric hookup, the group 24 weights a lot less, so if it doesn’t matter why add the extra weight?

Thinks

I thought the only difference was the physical shape. 12 volts is 12 volts, right?

If Jayco says to use only a 27 battery and it is in writing somewhere that you can prove to the dealer, I'd bring it back and request a 27 per Jayco's instructions. From a use standpoint, it shouldn't make a difference unless you are boon docking. A group 27 has a higher reserve capacity (more charge capacity) than a 24 and is more expensive. We got rid of all of them and got a couple group 29s for booning. The 24s they put in are worthless unless you always plug in. Then it doesn't matter.

If you camp at full hook up sites you don't need to worry. Only difference is size, weight and amp hours

IE - it won't last as long, but otherwise it's fine...

I wouldn't be barking at the dealer unless your paperwork says you paid for a 27, but only got a 24.

As others have said, if you are never relying on battery power, it doesn't really matter. However, for comparison purposes, Interstate Batteries shows their group 27 will last 0.6 hours longer with a 15 amp load than their group 24. Their group 29, by comparison, will last approximately 1.8 hours longer than the 24 on the same 15 amp load.

Ours has a group 24. We always have power and water hookups and never had a problem. 24's are cheaper than 27's, and easier to find a blem group 24 than a group 27 or 29.

Thanks everyone.

The only thing the paper work says from the dealer is a battery.

Grp 24 is just fine, the only difference is capacity.

The manual does specify Grp 24, can't explain why, but it also say "customer supplied". I don't think your dealer pulled a fast one on you.

I do not think trailers come to the dealership with batteries installed. This is added by the dealership.

For cost reason just about every trailer I have ever seen is sold with a GP24 Interstate Deep Cycle Battery. You can request any battery you want but you will pay for it...

Just purchased our first Jayco. Came with a Group 24 battery. Both of our previous travel trailers came with Interstate Group 27 batteries. Could be the dealerships preference.

If the unit's paper work says use a 27, I'd be after the dealer to rectify the problem. If an issue were to arise later where you'd have to make a warranty claim, there might be a problem if someone were to find out you only have a group 24. Personally I feel that type of attitude is BS, but that's exactly how some factory warranty repair approval people think. I used to work for a RV dealer so I have a certain amount of experience here.

As for reality, if you always go 'plug-in' camping, a group 24 battery should be fine. But if you ever go camping were no hook-ups are available, you'll need additional battery capacity. Without that 12 volt electrical source nothing will work in a travel trailer or 5th wheel. No refrigerator (even on LP gas), furnance, water pump or lights. Nothing, nada, zip.

Now here's one other situation to consider. Last week we were camping with an electrical hookup. During the morning I notced the refrigerator was running on gas. It had auto switched over due to a loss of power in the camp ground. It turned out power was restored in about 3 or 4 hours. But many campgrounds we all enjoy are VERY rural. It is not uncommon for extremely rural areas to lose power after storms in the summer. Depending on the cause, power may be restored in minutes, sometimes in hours or even days. Just sayin'.

X2 on what many have already said. Battery choice is relevant to how you intend to use the TT. I think you're good.

I chucked the cheap interstate battery that came with my trailer and put in two 6 volt batteries from Costco. When we are boondocking the power lasts the entire long weekend with us leaving lights on (I changed all inside to LED).
With the 12V battery it would barely last one night.
