Slides Extended During Outdoor Storage

About six months ago I moved to a home with acreage. This allowed me to begin storing the RV on my land instead of at a storage facility. It makes it extremely convenient for performing maintenance, prepping for trips, and cleaning up after trips. I keep the RV connected to 30 amp shore power and have been keeping the slides open. This lets me pop in there anytime and everything is all setup and functional. The RV is not under any trees. It does get a lot of full sun. I wax it often but the front cap has suffered fade and I've basically come to accept it. The waxing helps but it just doesn't last long.

Question --- Any concerns with keeping the slides open on a regular basis? I am concerned about wear and tear. However, I really like keeping them open and will probably continue to do so if there is likely no harm in it.

Thoughts?

If you have the resources, I would consider a steel/aluminum "trailer port" to minimize weather effects. If not, consider awning for the slides.

At some point I want to build a fully enclosed pole barn for the RV and pontoon boat. There were so many things that we needed to take care of after moving that we were pretty much tapped out though. So the pole barn has to wait a while but that's the plan at some point in the hopefully not too distant future.

Dealers leave their slides out on their display models for long periods of time. I do it both ways. Seems like I read somewhere it is best to operate the slides at least once a month for proper lubrication, etc. I do that and I just also bought some slide dry lube from Camping World and sprayed everything down.

We store next to our home as well and I've left the slide open these last 7 years. Only one bad experience, so be sure to leave traps or poison cakes out for the critters. Mice have eaten a hole in one of our dinette bench cushions. This year I think we may close them for the winter.

According to my slide manufacturer's instructions (Lippert), the slides should be in during storage, and you should run the slide "once or twice a month" to keep things lubricated.

Note bottom of page 4: http://www.primetimerv.com/download/...tionManual.pdf

That being said, it is clear that people have left their slides out for extended periods with few problems.

This has been covered a lot. I'm not sure it really matters in the long run. If you store it inside they'll be closed if you live in it for months at a time they'll be open. Seal maintenance should be followed, although I'm probably not on it often enough.

Our camper is sealed up better with the slides out. Mine are always out.
