Gas / Electric Fridge.

My fridge will only work on propane, will not work on electric. I have the auto gas / electric. Even when I turn the gas off it will not go to electric. I have looked at / checked everything that I am capable of. Any ideas? It worked fine last year. Sure it is something stupid. Thanks

Can you check the outlet it is plugged into to make sure it has power? Likely have to remove the lower outside access cover to find the outlet. Breaker on? Try to cycle it on and off, sometimes they are popped but don't necessarily look open. It also isn't unheard of for a breaker in the power center to have a loose connection, we are a rolling earthquake! But if you do open the power center please make sure you take proper electrical safety precautions.

First check would be the circuit breaker. Just reset all of them. If that doesn't help then you need a volt meter to see if the heating element is receiving power or not.

There is an electric heating element in the fridge that takes the place of the propane flame. They can burn out I suppose. The easiest test is to see if you have 120 volts directly across the heater when in the AC mode. If you do and it is not heating, the element is bad.

If there is no 120 volts there, first make sure you are getting 120 volts to the fridge. It may plug into an outlet or be hard wired. If plugged into an outlet simply plug your voltmeter into the 2 spade outlet holes and verify the 120 volts.

There may a relay that is used to switch the 120 volts on/off to the heating element. That could be another failure item.

If you are not comfortable using a voltmeter with 120 volts, have someone else do it. This voltage level can be hazardous to your health if you are not extremely careful.

The secret to troubleshooting is to see what you have and what you do not. You need to see where the 120 volts is being lost in the circuit. I recommend downloading the manual for the fridge and see if it has a troubleshooting section. At the very least it should show where the heating element is.

electric ON. Auto ON. Shore power of gen ON. Remove the outside cover and see if there is power on the outlet.

Most likely the electric heating element has failed.

fridge

Thanks to all for the reply. The fridge was unplugged from the outlet! Good news that it was a simple fix. However, it ticks me off because last winter I brought the unit to my dealer for warranty work and when I went to remove the outside cover I noticed the little plastic tab was broke. (I have never removed this cover) As I said last season it worked fine so the dealer must have been in there for something and unplugged the cord. Thanks again for all useful information.

I love it when a plan comes together.
