Thoughts and prayers going out to all those involved.

We were camping when the derecho came through our area in June 2012. Scary to say the least. We were at heavily wooded campground. My buddy had his awning out and as we were trying to close it the wind got under it and lifted me off the ground. Trees were snapping around us. A branch fell on the picnic table in front of me as I was trying to get back to the camper. Another branch fell on my buddy’s truck. We grabbed the dog, got in the truck and high tailed it out of the campground. We had a hard time getting out around the downed trees but finally made it out to the main road and sat in the middle of a large parking lot. The destruction left behind by it was unreal. I can’t imagine what a tornado would do.

That is horrible. We have been in a few situations over the years, which have made me think about what to do while we are at camp. We have been at state parks where the sheriff has come through and sent everyone to the evacuation shelters (aka bathhouses). Come out to down trees, flooding, just a general mess, to no signs of any issues at all.

A couple years ago we had reservations at a state park, but there was a state wide shutdown, so our reservations were canceled (thankfully). The night we would have pulled in, at about the time I estimated we would have been setting up at, a large tornado hit the park. Luckily it was closed. It took 2 months for the state to partially reopen the park. If I recall correctly they said there was over 500 trees down over the main road into the park. They said the park manager was exhausted trying to walk, crawl over the trees just to get to the main gate to do an initial evaluation. What is very scary about that situation was; when we were making our reservations (months in advance) we were considering two different state parks on opposite sides of the state. Both parks were hit by large tornados that same evening, both were closed for months due to the damage

We were camping at Virginia's Douthat State Park when we heard the news. It hurts to think the campers there were doing just what we were, just trying to have a good time.

Being a life long Virginian tornadoes were virtually unheard of in this state until recently. In fact here in the western portion of the state, I remember being taught in school that we would never experience one due to the mountains. In the last several years however, there have been several. It seems that teaching point may have once been true but now is no longer is valid. Storms seem to be more violent ever year.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to those lost, injured and their families.

frightning

We were at cherrystone 5 days before this happened. It's frightening to think about having to go through an experience like this.

I was taught the same thing in school. I think we have had 4 severe thunderstorm warnings in the last week with the NWS mentioning the potential for a tornado along with them.
Again, thoughts & prayers to all those involved.
