problems with electric awning

We have a 2008 Jayflight G2 29BHS with electric awning (was standard, I wanted a traditonal one but they said this was the greatest thing out there...) The weekend before leaving for our first trip of the season we were doing maintaninace (my husband is OCD about this). We put the awning out about 1 ft then it made a funny noise and came crashing out the rest of the way...Luckily we were home and not camping because we needed the tall ladders to reach to bring it back in and secure it. The dealer said that it was a brass shim between the two gears and they have seen this happen before. We are still under the 2 yr warranty until Sept but the motor assmebly is "not servicable" per Carefree of Colorado and in the future the part will cost $300-$400 to replace. The dealer cannablized a part from another motor to get us up and running. I am afraid to use the awning now because we had only used it about 7 times in the first place. Has anyone else had a similar experience with there awning? If i was ordereing a trailer i would definitely go back to a tradtional awning.

Welcome to the Jayco Owners Forum JaycoJenni! We wear at the dealer having warranty work down in February. We left to go to the campground and went to extend the awning. The motor side got hung, then sorta flung all at once. The next day we took it back and the tech just greased it up pretty well. Still hangs up. I will make sure they look at it when I bring the tt in four warranty work in late June. We too wanted the older non-electric awning, but oh well.

Glad to say we've never had a problem with ours Jenni (knocking on wood). I have thought about it many times though. The electrics are nice but, all-in-all I think I would prefer the traditional. It's nice to roll her in, in the middle of the night. But you can do so many more things with the manual types. Strap them down, adjust the angles, etc.

By-the-way, welcome to the Jayco Forum.

The only thing that holds the awning is a nylon gear, thats what broke and the awning fell.a world of warning purchase an awning lock that attaches at top of awning and clamps over awing and releases and locks with an awning rod.i have two on my 20 foot.the only thing holding the awning is the nlyon gear and going down the road and opening out isnt fun.

We haven't really thought about the awning on our new tt much as far as traveling down the highway. But with our last little tt, we used a velcro strap to keep it closed (just in case). Hmmm, might be a good idea to consider doing the same with the current tt!

velcro or awning lock sound like the way to go.
