Issue with winch on 1996 J1006

I might be wrong on the model number but here is the problem - the winch raises the roof but when I let up on the crank, it falls back down. From what I've read, the winch includes a clutch that prevents it freewheeling back down. Does this mean I probably need to replace the winch? Or can the clutch be cleaned/adjusted?

Can you hear it "clicking" as you crank it up?

Yes, if I remember correctly. It was back in December when I last used it and then found that it would not stay up (without some 2X4 supports)

If it's still clicking normally I guess I am not sure. The clicking sounds comes from the pawl engaging in a sprocket, tha'ts what actually keeps the roof from free falling down. As you crank it engages and locks into the next tooth on the sprocket. The pressure plate/clutch has more to do with lowering the roof, as you crank backwards you are basically unscrewing the handle from the spindle, as that happens the weight of the roof pulls cable off the spool and it tightens back up against the pressure plate. It is possible, even though you hear it clicking, the spring on the pawl is weak and cannot fully engage in the sprocket. You really need to gain access to the winch to find out for sure what is going on. I know parts are available for these, but given it's age and assuming the popup is in good shape otherwise, you might be as well off to replace the winch. If that part is broken/failing it's probably only a matter of time before something else goes wrong with it.
