Black Hills week before sturgis

We are looking at camping in the black hills area the week before sturgis. Is it going to be crazy? No problem with bikers just wondering if the rally gets cranking that early and if the area will be slammed with people already. First time to the area and this is the only date we have open.

There will be a few early birds. Mostly people riding around on their bikes taking in the sights. Not too crazy. Stay out of the biker bars unless you want crazy. The biker bars are easy to recognize as the parking lots are usually overrun with bikes. :-) Most people are there to have a good time and enjoy the brotherhood, but there are always some bad apples. With a few exceptions, the farther away from Sturgis the quieter it may be. During bike week many campgrounds have some roudyness going on 24/7. If you do have a problem forget about calling the police, they all leave town on vacation during bike week.

That time of year books up fast everywhere but especially in the Black Hills. May want to see if you can get reservations somewhere. Try close to where you want to be and work your way out from there. I'm sure you will find a spot open, but may not be at a private campground. I know KOA really doesn't have a problem with bikers since most know they are family campgrounds.

We went to the Black Hills at that time just this past summer. It really wasn't that bad, though we stayed in Custer, which is quite a ways south of Sturgis. Be sure to make reservations early. We stayed at Beaver Lake campground, it was very quiet at night.

Thanks for the info. The reservations are made and we will be 50 plus miles south of sturgis so it sounds like it won't be too bad. It is summer vacation time so we do expect crowds regardless.

you will see a lot of bikers even at 50 miles away. Bikers seem to really like to go out touring, and think nothing of putting on hundreds if not a thousand miles in a day.

Have been through the BH while Sturgis was going on and the week before. there were a lot of bikes both times and while going through Custer Park we wondered why we didn't see much wildlife and very few buffalo, asked the Ranger and he said that all the bikes going through the park kept them from coming close to the road. We stayed at the Federal CG's and really did not have problems getting a site. There were a few bikes but the majority stay at hotels or CG's that are close to town. All said the riders are good people and any trip through the Hills is a great way to spend a vacation.

This year the rally is expected to be bigger than typical. It is the 75th anniversary. I will be working in the area, but, if not, I would choose to visit when 200,000 - 300,000 other folks would not be there..and I am a biker so nothing to do with bikers...just the numbers. I know the campground I will be at, which is about 30 miles from Sturgis has been sold out on those dates for quite some time.

I noticed it was the 75th anniversary and that is what concerns me a bit. Either way reservations are made and we are looking forward to the trip. Thanks everyone for the helpful info.

As long as you have reservations you will be fine. As a whole Bikers are a great group of people. Only problem is, some attractions may be busier than normal. Enjoy your trip to the Black Hills.

We're heading that way with our X23b early July. Staying at Custer State Park. Anyone out there have any recomendations for what there is to see and do aside from Mt Rushmore?? We'll have 7 and 13yr olds with.
Can't wait for camping season!

I, too, am planning a trip to that area in late spring, and (although I have nothing against bikers) would like to avoid the crowds. What week is the rally, so I can plan accordingly?

Brdbrain2day, I've been told The Badlands are a must see. I plan on making them and Little Bighorn Memorial part of my trip.

The Rally is the first week of August.

Drive carefully and don't tailgate motorcycles. It will be busy this year but you shouldn't have any problems.

PS. Only the beer trucks have the "Right of Way" during the rally. Everyone else sits in traffic.

Been to the Rally several times as the bass player for a band. If I was planning a trip I would plan to miss the Rally dates adding a few days either side of the rally. Bikers are good people but to many good people in one place is not my idea of having fun.

This rally will set an attendance record . They are expecting over 1,000,000 people . The biggest one prior was in 2000 when over 750,000 people attended . The whole state has a population of near 700,000. Add one million people , it will be a zoo. Looking forward to it.

Just made reservations at Custer Gulch for bike week. They had a few sites left. Should be a good time.
