My understanding is the water bandit is simply a slip connection and not intended for a permanent use. I'd assume you have to hold the bandit on the spigot to keep the water pressure from blowing it off.

The majority of the posters agree that is not ethical to permanently connect to a community spigot but the consensus (as I understand it) is that it's OK to temporarily attach to a spigot to top off your FW tank….the alternatives are to carry in water in jugs or tear down and tow the TT to the FW filling point or where ever the CG allows you to fill.

Etiquette? No, that is a community water access. Its one thing to be close to the spigot and have enough hose that you can run a section of hose to fill your tank... its rude and not allowed to keep your hose permanently hooked up to the spigot your entire trip.

Parks like these are why people buy those portable totes, so they can bring more fresh water without breaking camp. Either that or be very frugal with your water use. Don't forget, whatever fresh water you use becomes black or grey water...

Be a friendly neighbor.

I'm not sure I understand your point...not trying to be argumentative but I don't see the difference between hooking up a hose with a "bandit" to fill a water tank as opposed to filling a 5 gallon container 6 times to fill my rv water tank. I'm not sure how this robs others of water unless you are saying that I shouldn't fill the rv tank at all? Could you explain?

In some campgrounds, the water supply is limited. While many campers may take 5 gallons at a time, they often won't fill a 100 gallon tank by filling and hauling a 5 gallon container 20 times.

Several national forest campgrounds in the east use solar water pumps and a holding tank that contains about 100-150 or so gallons of water. The actual water supply in the ground may not be limited, but getting that water to the surface and into the holding tank at the water station takes a long time. The solar panels and solar pumps work well, but pump slowly, as they are pumping water up from a considerable depth. If one RV empties the entire holding tank by filling his RV in one shot, the water supply for any other campers may not be available for hours, as the pumps work to slowly refill the holding tank.

That is why there are usually no threads on the spigot, and the spigot usually is spring operated so it must be continually held open to flow. Then people cannot simply hook up and turn it on and drain the holding tank dry. And even with a water thief, they have to physically hold the thief with one hand, and hold the spigot open with the other hand.

There are many designs built into a campground to facilitate behavior without posting endless rules everywhere.

Thank you, dewey02.

It's nice to know some of the realities behind the rules. Some aren't as arbitrary as they seem.

Why not just fill up your water tank when you enter the park, before you park at your cite? I'm with everyone else that says it's ok to fill up with a hose, but don't leave it on. Imagine the audacity to just leave a hose connected and monopolize one of the only spigots on the loop.

X2 on the treads missing. Many State Parks do this. However, buy yourself a "Water Bandit." They are sold at most RV stores or online and will allow you to hook up to a water supply with missing thread or non-standard treads. Get yourself a hose clamp to keep it in place. I bough mine from Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Camco-22484-Wa...s=water+bandit

That is the plan but I was looking for ways to bring additional water (if needed) to the TT after we set up. I'm not sure how many gallons of water a family of 4 will go thru in a few days. I know we tend to fill the grey tank in a weekend (I have a tote to tide us over until we break camp) and water consumption tends to be greater in the middle of the summer when we (at least the adults) are taking showers two times a day.

Water consumption. Very hard to say. We rarely have full hookups so the family is trained in water consumption, and every so often need a little reminder. To reduce water usage, when washing your hands do not turn the water on, get them wet, lather up the soap, then rinse. We crack the facet to wet the hands then turn it off, or have a small flow of water, lather up, and quickly rinse. Saves a lot of water by not leaving it on. Same for brushing the teeth and washing dishes. I would say we are fairly trained. We have a fairly small FW tank, and shower in the bathhouse. Our 45 gallon tank typically will last us 4-5 days.

When filling my jugs, I place the jug on the ground, use my water bandit on the spigot, and attach a short hose (10”??). The combination allows the water to enter the jug and not spray, all over the place, including my shoes. Back at the camper I put the water bandit on the spout of the jug again with my short hose, then pour it into the gravity fill hole. This gets more water in the tank, less on the ground, my pants and shoes.

I have used the spigots inside the park to fill up my tank if one was near my site. But I would not dream of leaving it hooked up......
