Headed North from central NJ area.

Headed to Salem MA this weekend. Staying at Winter Island state park and need some help. I ran a trip planner on the goodsam app and it has me headed via the Geo Wash bridge. Google does the same. I always see fellow campers posting to avoid it at all costs if possible and take Tap or other route. Just wondering why? I’m from the NY/NJ area so I’m used to bad roads and traffic. But Is it a traffic issue or just hard to navigate with a rig? We will be leaving early Sunday morning so rush hr will not be a problem.
I was thinking of taking 287 to 87 than 91 I believe but it adds a good hr to the trip. Any other suggestions from you guys you have done the trip before?

Can't speak to crossing GWB with a rig , but, the Cross Bronx expressway is notoriously bumper to bumper as well as narrow.

I just used Google maps to route from Parsippany to Salem and it went north on 287>287 East/Tappan Zee>287 East>15>I-91>I-84. 258 miles.

Thanks.
That’s exactly the route I planned to take if all else fails. My sister lives near Kingston so she had advised to come that way. I was gonna avoid 17 also. I can easily take 287 from where I live to 87 and follow google from there.

I live on Long Island and have crossed all the bridges in the tri-state area. The GW is doable but is usually not my first choice when towing. The lanes are narrow and the pavement is not good at all. You will be bouncing around and hitting potholes and whatnot. It's nearly a white knuckle experience if you're not used to it.

The Tap adds more mileage but lanes are much wider and more open. Just a more relaxing haul.

I will add also to try and arrive at the bridges around 5 am for the least amount of traffic. I always try and time it that way and I fly right through onto the NYS Thruway by sunrise.

I've driven the CB to the GW many, many times in many vehicles. I don't do it while towing because I'd rather not subject my trailer the beating those roads will give it.

TZB and I87 are part of my daily commute.

Be prepared for some delays because of the new spans.

The NY Thruway Authority takes very good care of the road surface.

A much more pleasant trip (though more miles) than going through NYC!
