Thanks to everyone for you comments and outlines of your experiences. We finally decided on a Chev Silverado Crew Cab 5.3 6 spd towing package integrated brake control and trailer antisway. I this that it will meet our towing needs and also be good for general driving.

We pick up the Jayco feather Select 28U sometime early June. It is about 500 miles from home.

I update on our towing experiences.

Choosing sway control is next.

Thanks

Does anyone have experience towing with these GM vehicles. Does the brake controller work well? Also does the integrated sway control cause any problems with a trailer WD and sway control setup.

We are also trying to choose which WD sytem to get for this trailer.

Thanks for comments and suggestions.

I have a 2010 chevy 1500 Z71 HD it has the six speed tranny, trailering & towing package. We have a 17Z which weighs less than your camper, but we have had no problems pulling little camper. Have taken 2 trips to Tenn. which is a mountainous trip, can make it on 3/4 tank of gas, also living in WV just about every trip we take locally(nearest campground 1 hr away) involves crossing mountains, our truck has served us well.

Hi Peter, congratulations on the new truck and trailer. I have the same trailer as you. We have had it for a year now and just love it. I towed it first with our old truck which was a 99 silverado with the 4.8 liter, and now our new truck which is the new body style 2007 silverado crew cab vortec max, 6.0 L with the upgraded 4sp tran, hd trailering package, tranny cooler,z85 suspension, stabilitrac, P3 brake controller.
I have towed the 28u loaded over our BC mountain passes, which is a hard pull for most truck and trailer combos, with both trucks. Both trucks towed this trailer well. You will be surprised if you have prior experience towing. The areodynamic front of the trailer makes a huge difference. After climbing uphill on one pass for the better part of an hour the tranny read 211 degrees. Most other hard climbs the truck would settle in at around 180 -190. Both trucks had 373 gearing. With a 6 sp you have nothing to worry about. Enjoy your 28u.

So how is it doing? Im Moving up from a little fiberglass trailer, to a Jayco X213 and have a 2012 GMC Sierra crew cab 4x4 with trailer package 3.42 gears. I found your post through a Google search because I'm worried about the 3.42 rearend and was wondering why they put it in a truck with a tow package. Must be because of the 6 speed tranny.

Fuel efficiency is one of the reasons. You can certainly tow with a 3.4 ratio, just not as much torque, so a little slower off the blocks. Enjoy the combination of a tow vehicle and a daily drive truck

The 6 speed with the 3.42 is fine to tow with. It's roughly equivalent to a 4 speed with 3.73. Your X213 is not too much heavier than my X20E. My truck is a 5.3, 4 speed with 3.73 gears. It tows my trailer beautifully. Never struggles. Rarely downshifts.

Thanks DocBrown your easing my mind. Don't want to have to much trailer for my 1/2 ton.

On top of that you've got more HP and torque than I do.

Towing capacity for that truck and trailer combination is not in question. But payload capacity for your truck is of concern. If the GVWR of your trailer is 7000#, then the tongue weight could be as much as 1050#. Add to that weight all of the gear in your bed, bed topper (if you have one), weight of the passengers and anything they might have in the cab with them, and I fear your truck will be overloaded.

Plenty of people do this, but I do not recommend it. Ask yourself this question: If you get into an emergency situation (high crosswinds, idiot driver, sudden stop required, tire blowout, etc), are you confident that your truck will be able to control 7000# of trailer behind you? Or will the trailer determine where the truck will go?

Others will disagree with me, saying, "I've done it for years with no problems." Perhaps they have. But have they encountered that emergency and can they speak from that experience? I towed a 7000# TT for about a year with a 1500 Suburban and I never really felt safe if an emergency presented itself. I soon traded for my current 2500HD that has the payload capacity and suspension that was built for towing a trailer that size.

Just my experienced opinion.

Mike, I was thinking along the same lines as you. But the GVWR of iplumb's trailer is 5500#. I looked it up before I posted. If a late model 1/2 ton has that low of a payload that he can't accommodate that trailer, then he's in trouble. My '08 has just over a 1600# payload.

You're right Doc. But I was replying to owenssailor's original post question, and he stated the GVWR of his trailer was 7000#. If that is incorrect, then he may be OK. I didn't look up the specs for his trailer since he provided the number along with his question.

And sure enough, the specs say 7000#. Look here: 2012 Jayco Jay Feather Select 28 U Trailer : Reviews, Prices and Specs : RV Guide

The Jayco 28U has a dry tongue weight of 750lbs ( website)

The GMC crew cab has a payload range of 1500-1950lbs ( website)

Depending on real payload capacity - he could be pretty close once he and his passengers and gear and beer are loaded

Didn't mean to high jack a thread. I was just curious how it ended up working out for the OP 3 years later.
