Roof coating

Getting my Jayco Jay Flight G2 23 FB ready to start rolling this year. It's an 08 I bought in June of last year from a dealer. It's in great shape, I just replaced the tires because they were 5 years old (not because they were worn or cracked) greased the wheel bearings and adjusted the brakes. My next thing is to coat the roof. I guess your suppose to do this every year, what is a good product to use on it?
Thanks for your help

Nope...do not need to do every year! You should inspect/clean your roof at least once a year. Caulk and patch where needed...Re-coat only if it needs it.

Depending on the material used on yours I was told to use Spic and Span on it 3-4 times a year and inspect all seams for possible leaks. The only coating reccommended was a paint like material that offered no sealing properties but just a new white look. The manufacturer said that it is common for the white to wear off and for black to come through. The painting is not mandatory and only for estectic purposes. They did not reccomend any type of treatments other than regualr cleanings and inspection.

When I bought my trailer, the tech told me to clean it regularly to keep any black streaks down and to check it twice a year for cracks, leaks, etc. and use Dicor self-leveling sealer as needed.

I think you will find that most things you buy to coat a rubber roof will peel off in chunks. Just wash it and take care of the sealing areas.

I am at 3 years and I was thinking about just doing a full run of Eternabond on all the seams as a preventative measure.

Our Prowler was 13 years old when the neighbor bought it. The trailer is now 18 years old and the rubber roof has only needed washing. It has not needed any other maintainance. The roof and seams are all good and it has been parked outside all this time. Just need to clean and inspect yearly.

Thanks for all the replies. looks like you saved me some work. I do wash the roof every time I wash the trailer, which is before I take it out, usually once a month. I'll get on top and check it for any signs of cracks.

If there is any area you're concerned with, I really like the Etendabond 4" tape. Amazon about $60 for 50' roll. Grainger $100 for 50' roll.
You can also look on youtube for Rubber Roof Coating. There's a couple good videos of the 2 part mixture and application. When I get ready to coat, I think I am going with the Rubber Roof.
Again, search around on the internet for best pricing.
Kind regards, Doug

Is it recommended to remove the old caulk and recaulk or just run a new bead over the old stuff. My concern is the two main seams on the front and back.

I applied 6 in. Eternabond to my front seam and am going to use 4 in on the back. My rig was relatively new so I did not have to do much prep. I bought a spray cleaner that they sell.

Check out the Youtube Video on RV roof caulking. You can do it either way. If you caulk over old, it needs to be cleaned with solvent and brushed into cracks with a paint brush. If you have the time, I would recommend removing the old caulk, clean and apply new. The caulk is made to peel away pretty cleanly. Make sure you use caulk made specifically for the type rof you have and not silicone. Silicone with damage the roof if you attempt to remove it later and has poor adhesion for top coating. Best regards, Doug

If you plan to just do miner caulk separation (cracks) touch-up, as stated just clean the old caulking surface before applying the touch up. If the old caulking is showing signs of lifting up from the rubber roofing material, then it's best to remove all the old caulking.

As member 'norty1' suggested, the best way to deal with the front/rear top cap seams is with EternaBond sealer tape. When applied correctly it will dramatically reduce the chance of a leak.

My front/rear roof seam project: http://www.jaycoowners.com/showthrea...ght=eternabond

Can I put eternabond directly over the excisting dicor? If not, what is the best way to remove the dicor prior to installing the eternabond?

I put mine right over the top of the Dicor. Used the 6" tape to make sure I had enough on each side. No problems so far

If you have some high places where the Dicor is piled up, you can carefully scrape it off using a plastic putty knife. No need to remove all of it, just get it as level and clean as possible and don't slip and damage the roof material, Better to leave it.
