Electrical (underground cable)

if I run an underground cable to a post in the yard and install a 30 amp box there, what size cable do I need to bury underground, AND what distance can I go with it. Camper is about 175 feet away from house, and post would be close to the camper. Thanks ----- Mike

I would not go any less than 8 awg , I ran 130' 10 awg to mine and had trouble tripping the breaker at the main box , changed to 8 awg and have had no more problems. also if you ever get a tt with 50 amp service the wire will be big enough.

First I would check with your local government to see if they have any specifications... hate to do something and get caught with not meeting their requirements.

Other than that here is a AWG/Amp/Length of run table that may be of value.
You may want to compare it to other searches.

I would use #2, for any surge/wire resistance. Better to be safe than sorry.

Your local hardware or electrical supply company should be able to answer this and know about any local regulations you need to be aware of.

120-13=106.95volts.
8awg= 8.20v
120-8.2=111.8

6awg= 5.16 volts
120-5.16=114.84
I would ran a 6awg copper wire for hot (black) and neutral (white) and a 8 awg copper wire green for ground. This should be the smallest size wire to ran. This is figured at 175 ft with 30 amp draw and using COPPER WIRE. You can run a longer distance but you'll need to up size the wire more.

After this being said always obey the local and NEC codes. (National Electrical Code).

Even if they do know, they most likely are not going to tell you what to use in an application like that. To much liability .
NW is correct on the #6.
