Talking GPS Recommendation

Will be driving for the first time without much, if any, navigation since my husband came disabled. Want a GPS that has a large screen (6-7"), lane assist, easy to get used to. Budget prefer up to $150 but can go a little higher if you refer to one that's awesome! Thanks, all!

The screen is a little smaller but we use Tom Tom.

I bought the TomTom with a 5" screen and just love it. Priced around $200 with free shipping from Amazon. Great GPS that is easy to use and not too big on the dash.

Also bought the dash mount.http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Tom tom or garmin will serve you very well with models in the $150 range or less. Easy to program a destination or to just track your position. No reason to spend xxx more for some of the higher end stuff. Screen size is not really an issue either and the bigger ones just take up more space and create blind spots on your dash.

All the responses you received are good and true. Here is just my concern. Because I've been caught on a road I should never have been on in a motor home, I bought a Rand McNally designed for RVs. Spent more than I wanted to but the peace of mind is priceless.

Garmin desl 760 is the best of both world's , you have a RV mode and a Truck mode and auto mode , it will have camp ground and truck stop's listed and everything between. is around $ 400 thow but worth it
in truck mode you can program in Hazard matte-rail like propane , and it will reroute you from going on bridge's or tunnels that don't allow propane .
also you can put in your RV or trailer dimensions and weights so you don't hit no low bridge's There is also a rv760 by garmin same unit but with out the truck info and no hazard materiel section , Go with the desl 760

I personally don't see any reason to spend money on a stand alone gps when I can use google maps on my smartphone. It is always up to date and does not require you to purchase the updates.

Not to be a smart-a$$, jhmlbgr, but how is that lady going to drive around holding on to her smart phone driving down the road, especially coming up to the exits, etc. Screen is pretty small also. I guess is she sprung for some type of dash holder, it might work.

We actually use a Nuvi from Garmin that now costs less than $150, but if you get lifetime maps, it runs around $180, if I remember correctly. We have had it for about five years and it has taken us to every doorstep and campground that we have programed into it. It has never let us down.

Thanks, everyone!

Appreciate all the info; problem is there are so many models you can go cross-eyed trying to compare them all. Budget is a little tight for the higher end but I do understand the peace of mind factor. Again, thanks for your help. It's nice to know I can come back here for info as we make our journey!

Please come back often, about anything; there's some good help here. Another consideration for the GPS choice. We plan most of our trips on a map program and then upload it to our Garmin. That feature can be found on the less expensive models in most brands. It's easy to do, and keeps us from being routed into places we don't want to go.

you mite want to check out the inter net for a manufacture rebuilt unit , sometimes they have them and you can buy a nice upgraded model for the same as a lesser model , once rebuilt by mfg they are as good as new

I have been real happy with my iPad and an app called CoPilot. It actually downloads the maps onto your device. You need to have the cellular IPad, because it has the GPS. I still have my Garmin NUVI, but seldom use it anymore. CoPilot is much easier to use for planning than the Garmin.

What ever you get, make sure you buy lifetime maps. It will pay for the cost of a new unit over time.

Jal0710 of course you would need to buy some sort of mount. They range in price from $10 and up and most tend to be in the $20 to $30 range, so very inexpensive. As far as screen size the majority of phones any more are in the 4.8" plus range and if you need a bigger screen you can always get a tablet. I know several people who use this ipad or android tablet for their gps. I know this is not for everyone but I like to not have to invest in single purpose devices.

Jhmlbrgr, the lady was talking about a budget of around $150. I think the price of a new smart phone will probably blow that budget, not to mention buying some type of tablet. And, you are right about a mount, they are not terribly expensive, the one I use for my Nuvi cost around $20 or less if I remember correctly.

Actually you don't need the "cellular Ipad" if you have a plain Ipad or tablet..There are several addon GPS sources for the IPad such as "BadElf" or "Dual GPS" which I use and it works with any tablet or computer that has "Bluetooth".Both around $100 and Amazon sometimes has used ones also.
If you have a "smartphone" just get a phone mount and use the maps/gps on it for awhile.Allways current maps.

We have a Garmin Nuvi 5" screen with LM (lifetime maps). It has done a fine job for us. A larger screen will be on the next one.........at some point.
If you don't have to have it right away, Christmas always brings out some nice reduced prices on models that they are phasing out. We paid under a $150. for ours after Thanksgiving.
Good luck.
