Front Storage area - inside access 17Z
The only access to the front storage area on my Z was from the two outside access doors. The doors allow outside access to the storage area under the sofa, and the storage area along the front of the trailer. You could not put anything large into the front storage area. To fix this problem I pried up the board that the mattress rest on, when the bunkends are closed. Then I added a piano hinge to the rear side of the board. This allows me to open the front storage area from inside the trailer and put larger items in the storage area.
The first photo shows the mattress folded back onto the bed, out of the way.
The second photo shows the board raised with the piano hinge installed along the back.
The third and fourth photos are looking down into the storage area.
This has been a very hand mod to my Z.

I like that-- I wonder why they didn't bother doing that for the customers to begin with.

There were a lot of things that I do not understand. Why wouldn't they offer the following options (which I had done or have done) outside shower, shower surround, Fantastic Fan, 12 volt jacks for bunkend lights/fans, DSI water heater, front stabilizing jacks, there are more but I can't think of them right now.

Nice mod... 
Kind of like the setup I've got 296 FBS...
The master bed flips up and you now got access to the front basement area (tray forward). Now you don't have to go outside to get to it...

Yes the same idea. Maybe I will add struts to hold mine open. Right now I just stick something in the opening. I was thinking of a light weight cable coming down from the shelf above the bed opening, but the struts would be nicer and always ready.

My bed lifts up with gas struts like Moparman`s. The bed in the back also lifts up for inside access to the storage area. You can store a bunch of stuff under those beds. -Lee

Question
Hey doc, how hard was it to pry up the shelf? I'd be afraid of breakin it, is it made of plywood or particle board? I think it's a great idea and thinking 'bout doing it to my Z......Thanks Shep.

Hey Shep, I did mine as well. It was not hard to lift. Only had finishing nails in it. I would say it was plywood. It is fairly sturdy. After all, most of us sit, scoot, or kneel on it to get into bed.

Front Storage
Tx tijdoc, that's one hell of idea, since my 19H only has 1 outside door, I have a real problem utilizing that space to it's fullest. I know there are electric & water lines in there so I have to be real careful when loading. Top access will be awsome, can't wait for more snow melt to uncover & do that & the front tool box mod.

tlhdoc It's done , I cut the top board in about 12" from ea end to do away with the interference from the front edges of the trailer. I also added framing (1" stock) along the front to provide support for a shelf I installed about 14" deep. the shelf is 1/2" pylwoood with (2 pcs 45 1/2 " long x 16 1/2 wide) a 1" finger hole in each to allow access to the bottom section if need be.I also screwed a 12/2" pce next to the hole for the clearence light so the shelf wouldn't rub on the wires. that space is so big if heavy stuff were to be put in it you would have to worry about " tongue weight" ie no 30 pac's , just clothes & blankets.++++ again great idea
