In the upper right hand corner of this page there's a white box above "Advanced Search"
Type in Surge protection and hit the enter key.
Not trying to be a smarty pants, but you can use this search feature to find answers to many questions asked previously.
This subject has been discussed extensively in the past.
Kind regards,
Doug

There are several types, some give a digital reading so you can monitor the actual voltage and some just have an idicator that lets you know if the outlet is in an over or under voltage situation. I purchased a portable one. It was cheaper and I can move it to my next TT. I do like the idea of a permanent one because you don't have to worry about it being stolen.

I myself have the permanent surge guard. On your question on if they really work, my answer is , while I haven't had a problem yet at least I am protected. Its better to be safe than be sorry...and much cheaper with all the electronics now.

I have a portable one as well. I guess it works...not had a problem yet. It will protect you against over/under voltage as well as reverse polarity. Well worth the money.

I bought one from Progressive that is portable.
And I do believe that if I had NOT had this plugged in last year while camping and lightening had hit a substation right up the hill from us and we lost elec for about 10 min, my elec system would have been fried.

My two cents. Our fifth wheel had a hard wired Progressive Industries 50 amp EMS. In the 4 years we had the trailer, it identified a power issue twice, and shut power down to the rig BEFORE anything bad could happen.
When we bought our WhiteHawk, the first thing I bought and installed was the 30 amp hard wired model of the Progressive Industries EMS.
The hard wired models are more expensive, about $250 for the 30 amp, $300 for the 50 amp. Those prices include the remote display feature that also features a bypass switch. The Progressive Industries device not only protects against a power surge, but also will recognize several other potentially damaging/dangerous power faults and automatically cuts the power to the RV.
I prefer the hard wired model vs. the plug in type for two reasons. One, the unit is not out in the weather, & two, no theft worries. The hard wired models are easy to install, only took me about an hour. Great, American made product with a LIFETIME warranty.

There are many RV dealers and online retailers that sell them. Tweety's & Lawrence RV Accessories have the best prices on the Web I have found for Progressive Industries products.
Good luck with your choice. One of the best improvements you can make to your RV IMHO.

Nothing can guarantee protection from a lightning strike surge. But these devices improve your odds tremendously. Well worth the investment.
I have and highly recommend the Progressive Industries EMS. It provides the most protection as it covers over/under voltage problems as well as surge protection.

GET ONE
the only problem with the portable ones is they can be stolen too easily... and they sit out in the weather... now I know they are built for sitting out there but I guess I am an old worry wort about electricity and rain.. so I modified my portable one to be inside my RV...

Seann - I would be interested in how you modified your portable to use inside. Maybe a photo or two if it's not too much hassle ? Thanks

I purchased the 30A portable Surge Guard from camping world on sale last year. It works fine, but one problem I encountered at a few sites was that the electric box was too low to allow the surge guard to properly hang vertically.
