Here’s an idea.... I had a friend from work tell me one year, at the start of the new year that it was his goal to learn something new every month. So, every month he dedicated idle time to that one subject matter. Knots one month, a language another, carving the next, and on and on. Kind of a cool concept. You’ll never perfect anything, but part of the hobby if you want to call it that is researching next months subject of choice. I need to do this myself someday.

I guess that's what I've been doing for many years without consciously thinking about it. Here are a few of the things I've tried so far:
Wood carving
Wood craft
Leather craft
Fly tying
Learn Cajun French (just dabbled)
Reloading
Knots
Macrame (years ago)
Paracord crafts
Guitar
Banjo
Fiddle
Mandolin
Dulcimer
Etc.

That's why I need help thinking of new things to try. Lol

Reading. Topics are unlimited. My BIL took up knitting/crotcheting and made gifts for people as well as donations of blankets to the needy. He liked dish clothes for quick projects.

You really have been there and done that! Maybe its time for a different approach. How about volunteering? Helping kids learn to read or something? Being a mentor and sharing a past hobby with young fatherless boys?

I read in spurts. I might read 4-5 books in a row then not read for months.

As for needle crafts like sewing, knitting, quilting, etc. Those are my wife's things. I have no interest in any of it.

I need to stay closer to home. That's why I'm looking for indoor things to do. When I have the opportunity, I'm more than willing to help my neighbors when I can but that's the extent of my volunteering.

Regarding the microscope go to amscope.com and look at the omax t490b. It's $170 cheaper than what we paid. You can get books from Amazon on how, what where. Enjoy, because algae has numerous critters in it.

Thanks for the advice but I think I'll pass. I'm not a scientist, I'm a mechanic.
