Agree on so much to see in the USA. We have been to a lot of the USA but so much more we want to see. We stay away from the big cities. Do not care for the big fancy RV parks. Just need somewhere to park the Class C like National Parks, State Parks, COE parks as a base and sight see the surrounding area. We are selling our house here in Mobile and hitting the road for about six months before buying a small place in North Alabama near our daughter and son in law as a base. But not cutting back on traveling while we both have good health. What’s nice is they have a concrete RV pad next to the shop on their five acres and I installed a 30 amp RV receptacle. Son in law has a dirt race car so he has a full shop of equipment in case I need it.

I retired in 2012 & DW retired in 2016. We did some traveling after she retired. Then in early 2017 I ended up taking over the total care of my Mom, who now lives with us. And DW had total knee replacements (May & December of 2017). We were able to take weekend trips and 1 week trip by having our daughter or her husband taking care of my Mom.

Heck I retired at 57. Got fed up with my job (Supervisor for TSA and point of contact at small airport). That was 11 years ago and never looked back.

Smart investing, though the big recession hit 3 months after I was let go due to business conditions and I took a big hit. I did take advantage of the crash to buy a number of companies that made big recoveries (1 stock dropped to 0.17/share. I bought 10K shares ($1700) and sold 15 months later at $48.36/share. Research and buy what you know.)

Because I lived in an area (northern MN) with high unemployment over 20% and had been looking for at least a PT job to keep me busy, MN Unemployment paid me more than I made when I was working every month for 3 years thanks to the increases by the politicos in DC and federal extensions of benefits. Since there were no jobs due to my age and experience (the jobs I applied for said I was overqualified and they couldn't "afford to pay me what I was worth" or I was "too old (57)" and "they could hire some kid out of high school for 25% of what they would have to pay me", there were no job offers for me or others my age.

I didn't collect my pension or Roth IRA until the unemployment ended. Allowed me to save and pay for my wife's PhD (graduated after 4 yrs at age 55). Two years on faculty at Northern AZ University (Flagstaff), now tenured faculty at a small 4 yr in the U of Georgia system and she retires in 5 years.

And as of today, my stocks are worth 6 times what they were prior to the Oct 2008 crash. That's how I did it.

Actually, it's really, really simple... even a caveman can do it...

Very basic... Save 10% of your salary Pre-tax (so you never miss it), then save 10% of your take home pay for emergencies, big purchases, etc., then live on the balance.

Oh, and MAKE a budget, and stay on it and review your monthly spending, and adjust as necessary...

Not rocket science by any means...

BTW, I retired at 57.

Ironically probably by not spending their money on an RV or a fancy truck when they were younger.

Not retired. Just my guess.

This is really a good statement. I'm going to make my daughter read this.

The key to early retirement is to make it a goal early on in your working career. When I was in my late 20's my father died at 61 1/2 just weeks after announcing his retirement at 62. I told DW then that I wasn't going to wait until some actuary said it was time. You can spend when you are young and you won't have it to spend when you want to retire. Those new cars, annual trips to Disney with the kids, loans to float it all, never learning to say NO, and the belief that the Stock Market was the same as buying lottery tickets.

Not trying to say it is easy nor that it is without setbacks. It gets a lot harder for every year you delay the commitment to saving and investing for your retirement.

I don't do any of those things but I like my toys. You have to live in the now, tomorrow is not promised. I was told 1.5 years ago I have cancer and if it spread, I have 5 years to live. Luckily the doctor was wrong and I don't have cancer (I have twice yearly check ups to watch it)

Point is you need to plan but don't deprive yourself now

I had a serious misdiagnosis 9 months ago as well. I went weeks looking like it was the worst. Very sobering to say the least.

We don't know the cards that we're dealt so my thoughts now are to find balance.

Glad to hear that you're OK 33 RLDS.

True, you have to live for today but ALSO plan for tomorrow, as no one knows what day is their "expiration date".

The problem is, 3/4 of the population only live for today, with no thoughts about the future. There's a reason why 70%+ of the population can't come up with $400 for an emergency expense...

We could all retire at 55 if the government would stop stealing from us to fund the welfare state!
