I have recently retired, most will tell you that you need a lot of money saved up and while that is somewhat true in regards to retiring early, what allowed me to retire early was\is being debt free now and for the last few years of my career. It turns out that I don't spend a lot each month, just utilities, food, taxes and insurance, the rest goes to RVing for the most part along with misc expenses. ~CA

I'm 53 now. My original plan was to retire at 65. That's now achievable so my new goal is to retire at 62. I have been investing heavily in my 401(k) since last year... So far so good...
Working on paying extra on my mortgage... goal is to have that paid off in 7 years. We are in the process of de-cluttering our current house. Will sell when I retire. Have some home improvement plans for the cottage up north to make that my new main address....
I feel like I got a lot to do in so little time... and it's 9 to 12 years from now...

59 yrs and 9 months. Only regret is should have gone sooner. Go as soon as you know you can afford it. Just because you work longer does not mean you live longer. Safe travels

One year after I retired I sent email to guy who was my counterpart at another branch to let him know how much we were enjoying retirement. He responded that the company VP had a bet that after six months after I retired I would call and ask for my old job back. WRONG. He lost that bet!

Going back and reading my response from early April, I neglected to mention that my retirement at the end of March, was actually my 2nd retirement. I enlisted in the USAF in 1979 at age 17. I retired as an E-6, Technical Sergeant, in 1999 ate age 37 with 20 years of service. I get my military pension payment at the first of each month. Gotta say, I love getting wake up money. That's one of the main reasons I could afford to retire from auto parts when I did.

the wife and i are planning to go in about 6 years, will give us both 20 years of service for our crappy state and be 57, mortgage will be paid off and daughters student loans done.
then we are out of here!!!!

This is an older post, and don't recall if I replied already or not.
Goal is 55. In theory it is doable, but I suspect a year or slightly more. We want to retire 100% debt free. DW is a 9 months younger than me, she said she is retiring on her 55th birthday no exceptions, I hope she works another 9 or so months so we can meet or beat that goal.
Only thing that still concerns me, is the medical insurance!

If you are an honorably discharged veteran of the US military, you can probably sign up for VA health insurance. Might be worth checking into.
BTW, I signed up for VA health insurance about 10 years ago. I currently have private (employer sponsored) health insurance. The VA insurance is my "safety net" if I were to lose my private insurance.

A while back, the VA went to "categories". With our combined incomes, I would be in Cat 8 & the VA wouldn't even give me a card indicating I am a Veteran. DW has one because she is S/C. The last time I tried was October 2015. DW was a bit upset with me because she had been after me to sign up back in the 80's.

I also tried many years ago and was also told my income was too high.
I was told the VA relaxed the eligibility requirements do to the Affordable Care Act (aka "ObamaCare").
It was prodding from a couple co-workers and some fellow Tailhook Association members that prompted me to re-apply for VA Healthcare benefits.

Prior to my retirement 10 years ago, 20 or so years ago a co-worker got MRSA after a surgery on his foot. Employer provided health insurance WOULD NOT COVER the MRSA treatment, so he checked himself out of Bergan Mercy Hospital Omaha, had his wife drive him about three miles to the Omaha VA Hospital where they admitted him and treated him for 12 days at ZERO charge. His bill from Bergan Mercy was $6,800 because it was an "out of network" provider. He to this day uses the VA health system, even after moving to Arkansas. Differences between us: He served in country in Vietnam (1971-1972), I didn't. I made about 4% more salary than he, and at the time DW was making 60% of what I was and his wife didn't work.

Retirement age
I just want to thank all the guys & gals that served our county! Y’all definitely deserve better!
Having said that, I have 3 yrs, 1 month & 8 days until I’m eligible to retire from the federal gov! I will definitely be retiring at the end of that last year…of course I will be looking for another job…because that’s who I am. I enjoy working and getting out of the house…as long as my next job allows me to travel in the RV!
Edit: I guess I should add that I’ll only be 47 when I retire, so I’ll be striving for a 2nd pension to support this RVing addiction!
