Travel route MN to St George UT

Well..... We were supposed to be heading out this week for AZ for the month of February. My husband needed surgery so AZ is out. We had planned to head to Leeds UT for March and still want to go as long as my husband is feeling well. I’m nervous going through CO Rockies and thought I 40 through New Mexico would be farther but less chance of bad roads. Any suggestions?? Thank you

Do you have chains? In case of snow CO requires them. NM advises them not required.

NM I 40 has at least two grades either side of Albuquerque. Flagstaff is often snowy.

I bet the weather will dictate.

I have only traveled both in the spring.. 40 was very windy.

Looking on the map, I think I would go south to Des Moines and then west on I-80 all the way to SLC, Then south on I-15 to St George.

Chances are unless there’s an active storm front, the interstate should be well maintained, if you encounter bad weather you should stop and hole up till it passes.

I 80 gets some horrible winds. I avoid I 80 in Wyoming at all costs, i've seen to many semi's flipped over

At that time of year, you can easily have snow and winds on I 80 or I 40 and I 70. Watch the forecasts and make your choice. Not a particularly good time of year to travel. Later March your in tornado weather in the midwest also.

Good Luck.

Thank you for the input. Winds actually scare me more than snow does. We may decide to take the long way around. Kim, thanks for telling us about the grades near Albuquerque. We may just scratch it and wait a year. Life dictated a different direction for our first winter away. We are newbies and certainly do not want to chance things. It probably would make us more apprehensive to give it another go next winter if we have a bad day experience!
