We go to Yellowstone a lot. At first I had a gun. It was not enough punch for a grizzly so I left it home. We stopped pulling over at Walmart bye to crime. So the need is not there. We were at a rest stop on I95 to sleep. Then all kinds of police came in and we did not what happened. We found out a person was killed by a gun. Never herd anything. We were exhausted. Our 5 wheel was a four season rv. We put the radio on to keep our golden retriever quiet. After that we go to a campground. I just don’t feel comfortable making a fast call. Not enough training. But I wish I could.

Having been in the Army for 28 years including two combat tours I feel comfortable carrying a sidearm. A Ruger LCPII .380 is my pocket pistol and I never leave home without it. When out west in bear country I carry my wheel pistol chambered in .357. I hope I never have to employ either but much like a fire extinguisher better to have it and not need it ..........

My son has a Four round 50cal. revolver. This will stop a bare. I shot it one round. Never again. He camps with a back pack and a tent.

Never leave home without it.

Speaking of small cannons, my brother has a hand gun called “The Judge”. The rounds are HUGE. Cut a large cigar in half and that is the size of the rounds. Only holds four but would easily punch a 3 inch hole in a bear for sure. Nastiest firearm I’ve ever seen.

If you’re not holding it tight, the kick will jack your wrist up something crazy.

Campersam9,if your not comfortable having a firearm with you by all means get more training. Dw and I always have a Smith and Wesson 9mm with us. If I am going somewhere that I'm not on top of the food chain I bring the Remington 870 (12 gauge shotgun 18 1/2 inch barrel). It's load with 6 round of oo-slug-00-slug-00-slug.

This sounds like a law enforcement approach. I like it!

Good advice happy. Once a month I'm at the range maintaining my proficiency.

I'll bet that 870 is difficult to strap to his leg.

So which states do you you guys have permits for? I realize CAG being former LE is in a different category. I have Permits for NY, PA, FL, and UT which pretty much covers me for the states we'll potentially visit.

33 states honor my Colorado CCW. There is *always* a firearm in the camper when it is being used, as it's my home during those times. It doesn't matter to me where it's parked. CCW or not, you have certain rights in your 'house'. The topic of concealed carry is not necessarily the same topic... good to have though. I usually get involved in these threads at some point, it's just good to understand that CCW isn't always required for what a lot of us do / don't do with our firearm(s), still glad I have my permit.

A judge only shoots .410 and .45 Long Colt. While big, neither are particularly powerful rounds. The .410 would just piss of a bear.
