For highway closures etc, the Caltrans Quickmap is good: https://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/QM/maps/...,-122.39#page1

Also the various Caltrans districts have Facebook sites. The Salyer fire is in Trinity County (CT Dist. 2), but near Willow Creek, which is Dist. 1. Both would have info.

Also, I discovered this site, which incorporates the highway conditions for the western states. Very helpful.

Thanks to everyone who replied. Luckyduck, your last post helped. We took 299, no problems. We did use the air-conditioner through the smoke, great suggestion. Bit of an addition, due to a medical issue at home we ended up driving 12 hours that day. We recognized the safety issue so made multiple rest stops along the way. Again, thanks to everyone, this forum is awesome.

Sorry about your abrupt return but glad the trip on 299 went well!

299 to Redding was no fun today! 5 hours to go 120 miles. Lots of rain, 7 full-stop pilot car sections, 2 with very long delays, and a lot of slow trucks going up the mountains.

That sucks. A friend took his motorhome over to Trinidad last Sunday and said he had to dodge rocks the size of basketballs in places on 299. Said there were less-lucky folks who ended up with fiat tires. Rains and fresh burn scars sent a good mix.
