Just a suggestion, but might consider leaving your RV at home and fly to Ak and then rent a motorhome from any of several companies in Anchorage. We have done this twice and loved every minute. The why of this is Alaska is BIG, really really big, and far away from the lower 48. You should ponder what you are really wanting from your adventure, exploring alaska or driving several thousand miles thru Canada before arriving at the Ak border. We chose to spend our time and miles actually exploring Alaska. On our trips we met and talked with several fellow travelers who chose to drive up. Almost all experienced delays and expensive maintenance or repairs on their long drive across Canada. Most said if they had it to do over again they would fly and rent. We drove between 1800 and 2000 miles on each of our Alaska rv adventures, all of them in Alaska. We have driven on almost all paved roads in the state [except Anchorage] and many gravel roads too. Alaska is truely the last frontier. In making your decision to drive up you will also be making the decision to drive back to the lower 48. We met people who had driven 4 or 5 thousand miles before they did the first mile in Alaska. We were truely exhausted at the end of or 2 plus week vacations and couldn't imagine that drive home [over 5000 miles] in our case. That seat on the flight home was tight, but in a few hours we recovered our car at the airport lot and were home in just another 2 hours.
Another suggestion if you decide that a drive across Canada is something you really want to do, you might look into signing up to drive a new RV from N Indiana and deliver it to the rental company in Anchorage. They will cut you a deal and the wear and tear will be on their RV, not yours. You drive up and fly back. A lot of people sign up to make the deliveries.
We rented from ABC in Anchorage and would highly recommend them. If you plan your trip before Memorial day or after Labor day, they offer a 50% discount. No extra milage, insurance, or tax charges. You just pay the rental [ours at the discounted rate was approx $100/day 4 years ago. All units rented are 2 model years or newer. Our last rental was new with only 7000 miles on it.
What ever you decide, save time and energy for when you get to Alaska. You will understand why when you are 25 miles from the airport or when you clear the bordor near Chicken Ak.
