Camp Burson/Hungry Mother State Park VA

Has anyone stayed recently at Camp Burson/Hungry Mother State Park in southwestern Virginia ? We have reservations there in August, and would like your opinions and observations in order to know what to expect.

I have driven by the signs on I81 pointing to the camp ground more time than I can count. Have never headed up the road to take alook see...

I heard alot of good remarks about Hungry Mother...

You can see alot of good pictures of the place by entering the name in google search and when it loads up select GOOGLE IMAGES on the left hand side... You will get a lot of pictures all in one spot regarding Hungary mother...

Haven't been to Hungry Mother in a couple of years but it is a great place. Time is the only thing that has kept us away. Another one of Virginia's first state parks opened in 1936 and built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. I forgot the name of the campground we liked but it was the one east of the office along the creek. A few years ago the state bought out a nearby private campground and added it to the park. They did the same thing at Douthat SP. In my book anytime they add to a state park it is a good thing.

Just wondering. The web site does not have any sites that can handle over 35' RV's. Has anyone been there for some first had experience. Could a 38 ft fifth wheel get into this park?

We stayed at Camp Burson/Hungry Mother for a couple of days on our way up north this past May. It wasn't bad... but as contrasted to a SP like say, DeSoto SP in Fort Payne, AL, it was not near as nice. We opted for a pull-through site that was plenty roomy and there was plenty of shade from the trees. This old boy I met from Tennessee told me that Camp Burson used to be a private campground that the Virginia SP dept bought because it offered better amenities than the SP itself. As I recall, it had full hookups... water, electric and sewer. They also had WiFi, which wasn't half bad. The bathrooms were great and they had a nice on-site laundry that was very convenient. All in all, I would say it's a decent place but if you're looking for quiet solitude, this isn't the best place for it.

I don't know if you're heading north or south but you if you're heading south, check out Natural Tunnel SP on the border of Tennessee and Virginia in a place called Gate City. It's about 85 miles southwest of Hungry Mother. Personally, I liked this place a lot more than Hungry Mother but it's a climb so make sure you TV is up for it. They have a great little chair-lift that takes you down to see the Natural Tunnel and the sites were much larger. No sewer, WiFi, etc. but I still liked it better.

Norty, I think the pull-thru sites would accommodate a 38' RV.

Norty - call the site at the number listed on website to be sure, but the lady I made my reservations with asked how long was my trailer. When I said 33 feet, she said I was just under the limit. From the pics on the website, it looks like some sites might accommodate longer rigs, but don't really know. Good luck.
