After seeing suggestions for Custer, I almost feel the need to clarify. This big trip was early on in our ownership of the camper. Back then we felt we had to have hookups. If we did it again, we'd probably go to Custer. Not that anything is wrong with Rafter J, just that we've learned to camp differently.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Before we were empty nesters we would have loved rafter j with the kids and our trusty old pup. But now it's the DW and I with a our 17z and we enjoy a bit more room and hookups and privacy. So Big Pines here we come. And a note to Cdash, I totally agree about not needing full service all the time, mostly we take 3 day weekends to state parks and just have electricity. But for a full week out west it will be nice not to have to worry about overfilling the 17z's small holding tanks. They are fine for a couple of nights but I don't know about a 7 day trip. Anyway, thanks again to everyone, this group is the greatest.

We are here enjoying the hospitality of Big Pines campground. If this were only a little closer to home we would be here a lot. Great people and we have a super site at the back of the campground backing up to forest service land. Had a couple of deer about 10 feet away from us earlier this evening. Thanks to everyone who suggested this great place.

We stayed at the Palmer gulch KOA 2 summers ago. We had a great time there. A lot of activities for the kids to do.
