Central Oregon and Coast

Taking a 3 week trip in June up Central Oregon and over to the Coast. Am planning on seeing:
Crater Lake
Painted Hill
Columbia River Gorge
Coos Bay/Sand Dunes
Rogue River

Pullling a travel trailer. The only hiway that seems a bit challenging is 38, but I google viewed it in satellite mode and it seems OK.

Any ideas on what we might also see in the areas or great campgrounds. I want to complete reservations this week.

You might check out either Fort Stevens State Park or Nehalem Bay State Park. Fort Stevens is quite popular - very close to Astoria. Nehalem Bay is about an hour south of Astoria on 101. We stayed there last August - close to the beach and a couple miles of walking trails - very nice and well kept. We haven't been much further south on the coast with the trailer but I do know that most everything on the coast fills up fast. Good luck with the reservations - should be a great trip..

If you like the Pacific you'll love the Oregon coast.

One of our favs on the coast is Oceanside RV Park in Coos Bay/Charleston. Here are a couple of our trips;

I should have mentioned this in my earlier post but about 40 minutes north of Salem is the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum. It's been a while since we've been there but it's a fun place to visit. Here's the link to their web site:

We were supposed to leave tomorrow but van broke down and we had to reschedule our trip. Every camp ground allowed us to reschedule, only the one $8.00 charge to change the dates. Instead of April it will be a 3 week trip in June.

Thought it was going to be a June trip at first. It's going to be a bit cooler this time of year so dress accordingly and you might have a little rain.

This pic. is at Cape Arago, Charleston, Or. Just west of Coos Bay and a great campground to stay at is Shore Acres State Park, within walking distance of this view. The views get better the farther south you go as you'll find out on your 2nd trip. As a matter of fact the total coast is spectacular.

We've taken two trips from Redwood NP, CA all the way up to Washington, all along the coast. It would be hard to even give suggestions of what to see - it's all so beautiful. We stayed in Crescent City, CA to see the magnificent Redwoods; Bandon, OR; Lincoln City, OR; Astoria, OR and on up to Long Beach, WA and then across to Olympic National Park. We really liked the Maritime Museum in Astoria. The Coast Guard is really amazing; and to us central states people, we just don't experience or appreciate how brave they are and how much they do. We went back through central Oregon along the Rogue River. It's a beautiful drive - narrow and busy road though. We're going again in early fall - just can't get enough of that part of the country. Enjoy the trip - you won't be able to stop taking pictures.

Thanks, did you take 101 up the coast. I was told that it was tough to travel upon with a TT. Out TV broke down so we had to reschedule this trip to June. Looking forward to it.

We took 101 all the way up. There were parts of the road that were pretty chewed up with a rough ride, and there was a lot of road construction when we were there (maybe that means the roads are now a lot better). The road, in spots, is very winding with some tight turns; but as with all roads, ocean or mountain, if you take it slow and smart, it's manageable. We were pulling a 19-foot trailer in a Durango. Must not be too bad - we're going back!

We are leaving next week on this trip. After we had to replace the engine on our TV. Thanks again for all the help and let us know if you've thought of anything new.

We stayed at Maryhill state park in March on the Washington side of the gorge right on the river, yes trains on both sides of the river but was OK

A little late to the party but highway 38 is not a problem at all, good road, regularly drive it with my Seneca and cargo trailer @ 66’ long total at 55-60 mph.....but then again I have probably traveled that road thousands of times.

The Oregon coast has lots of campgrounds. Going up the Columbia the campgrounds are often full. Be sure and get a reservation for that part of your trip. (The windmill crews have been keeping the private campgrounds full.)

Hi, Thank you. We made reservations twice, the first time we had to cancel as the TV needed a new engine (at 35K!). The trip is all set, we leave Monday. Took that TT to the CAT scales today.

be advised that most of the trails on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge are still closed due to last years wild fire. Multnomah Falls trail is partly open but you will probably have to take the shuttle buss from rooster rock (a few miles west of the falls) as the parking lot is usually full. that said it's worth the effort.
Marry Hill Museum at the eastern end of the Columbia River Gorge on the Washington side is well worth a visit.
