Charleston, Sc

Just spent 4 days in Charelston. We camped at James Island county park campground. This place is beautiful. Large sites, back in or pull through, fhu. The campground has a huge dog park, water park splash pad, hiking trails, biking trails. Its 15 minutes from Folly beach and 20 minutes from downtown. 10 minutes from grocery stores. We left a day early due to the storm coming through and me not wanting to drive through 35-40 mph winds headed back to Knoxville. They actually refunded me a day for leaving early. Great place!

We camp there often and live 4 miles away. We missed the last mess from Matthew as we are in Waynesville, NC.

Camped there 3 nights beginning of August. It was hot, humid and rained every night. I did love the camp ground for all the reasons above. Only thing was with so much rain before, every time it rained there would be flooding at the sites. Ours would flood over the Sewer trap. That was a bit disconcerting. I wasn't hooked into it, only to dump from time to time when there was no flooding. I loved the water park and I got a bit lost on the trails. We rented a car and that made site seeing much easier but kinda expensive. I plan to return again, this time bringing my motorcycle

JI County Park Great Place.

As a Charleston resident, I can attest to the great campground here. During this time of the year, they have a magnificent Christmas light show each night. Not sure on exact dates. Also, during the summer, there is a very nice water park at the site well suited for all ages. Enjoy!

My wife and I hope to arrive in the Charleston area on March 30, hope to stay for 4 nights. I am looking for a place to make reservations. James Island is full for our expected stay. Any other recommendations for a a park that has online reservations?

Resident of Charleston. Probably a challenge finding camping in our area at that time. There are two just south of Charleston that are near Ravenel. Short drive into Charleston, Seabrook, Folly Beach. Oak plantation and Lake Aire. Never stayed but use their sewer dump from time to time. Both decent, clean and safe but not the beauty of James Island. Good luck.

Thanks for the feedback. I am calling Oak Plantation tomorrow. They sent me an email and said they have a spot for me.

Good Call!

I drove from Miami to Statesville NC on Saturday during that windstorm. I-95 was a nightmare with the end of Bike Week and Spring break traffic. What usually is an 10 hour trip took 14.

NOTE: I did not notice the date of your original post, disregard.

Finally got a hold of the Oak Plantation folks, they now only have 2 nights available for my stay (Th and Fri). I can get a 1 night stay at James Island on Sunday night. So now I need a place to stay on Saturday night. Does anyone know if the Walmart on James Island allows RVs to stay in the parking lot over night?

There is also a KOA nearby, at Mount Pleasant / Charleston KOA Holiday. We will be there for a week in May

I have seen rv's parked there overnight. Check with the store to be sure. I live a few miles from there.

Did you try Lake Aire? They are just a few miles from Oak Plantation. https://www.lakeairerv.com/

Thanks Norty, but I was hoping to stay at James Island since I have Sunday night scheduled at the county park. I always check in at the Walmart when I arrive. Just trying to do a little reconnaissance. I will give them a call. Lake Aire's website says they have no availability in March or April! KOA's website has been down, I need to check there also I guess.

The KOA's are a 15 or more miles drive to either one. I did get a email that their web site was down but you can still get them on the phone.

Another suggestion is to ask the JI county Park campground if you can stay in the parking lot by the climbing wall without power on Saturday night because you are having problems finding a site. As you have reservations for Sunday. I have seen other campers in that area for a night or so. Rest rooms and showers are within walking distance. If that doesn't work let me know I may be able to find something else. What are your power requirements?

We liked the KOA in N Charleston. Close to lots of things and a great take out seafood restaurant across the street

Caught a break, same site I had reserved for Sunday at JICP opened up for Saturday night too. Gotta love the over-bookers.

Never did confirm whether I could stay at the Walmart there, called 20 different times at different hours of the day and I was never able to talk to a human.
