Chesapeake bridge tunnel rest area

Looking for a place to spend the night before getting to the OBX
Thinking about the Kiptopeke state park at Cape Charles or a rest area.
Never stayed (boon docked) at a rest area before.
Is there one near the bridge tunnel safe to stay the night at?

I don't know if I would stay at the rest area. You could, it's nice, but wide open and just off the highway between it and the ocean. It's only about a 1/2 mile wide at that point right at the foot of the bridge on the north bound side. The one on the south bound side is just a pull off overlook.

Kiptopeke is about 3 miles up the road and would be better for the extra few bucks IMHO.

WOW!
did you all know Kiptopeke state park charges $5.00 per dog per night on Reserve America or their own website states that they charge $10.00 per dog per night. Crazy!

Sounds like their trying to soak us for every thing they can. Budget cuts.
I also wonder if the people that don't clean up after their dogs are costing the rest of us money.

I am trying to find a blade of grass here in TX for my dog to pee on lol

Safe travels,
Doug

I'd say, 3 dogs at 10$ each + 37 a night for the site plus 5$ booking fees: $72.00 for state park site? oh! and don't forget the taxes!
I think I'll take my chances on the dog thing. I'm not sure which is the thief, the people lying about having X amount of dogs or the state.

Try Cherrystone. They are not a state park and being only a night you might even go for a primative site for a deal.

OR if you are looking for a cheaper alternative to Kiptopkeke or Cherrystone that includes pets free consider Pocomoke River State park, On Maryland`s eastern shore North East of the CBBT but only about 10 miles east of rte 13. The Acorn Trail loop allows pets for free, sites about 35 a nite. Electric only though.

There is also a Walmart at Onley, Va. I have seen RV`s there parked but not sure if you can spend the nite. The rest area on the north side of the CBBT should be secure, they have their own police force that patrols the property.

Can you take a TT through the tunnels? I thought that propane bottles were not allowed and that would stop you.

Of course I'm going back quite a few years in remembering the restriction so maybe its no longer an issue.

Yes you can take a TT or Fiver etc through the tunnels. At the CBBT toll booth they just ask you if your propane is turned off which it should be when entering tunnels, and you are good to go.. The Hampton Roads bridge tunnel on RT 64 has an inspection lane where you are supposed to exit onto for tank inspection.

Thanks Lee!

We have been going north and south on 81 / Blue Ridge Parkway the past few years and an eastern route would be a change. Do you know if one can get a TT on the Cape May Ferry? The NJ Turnpike is about my least favorite road followed by I-95 from Baltimore to Richmond.

Trip went really well. We had a storm come through while in Keptopeke State Park. We anticipated the storm so parked between two other trailers near the bathrooms. It got somewhat rocky around 3 am but the winds died down and the rain stopped. No problem going through the Bridge/tunnel. Somewhat narrow tho.
Much cooler today, and windy. Nice spot facing the dunes. Haven't seen any JOF stickers yet.

What did Kiptopeke end up charging you for the dogs? $5 a nite last Fall. It was a bit breezy today, I was out on my boat working, only about 20 miles North of there this morning...

Chesapeake bridge tunnel rest area

$5.00 a night per dog
No one at the booth, envelope and honor system. I paid my full fee of 42$ + 15$ for the dogs like any good camper would
Nice CG

Glad you all make it safely Boubou.
It must be windy across the country.
Makes it hard to open the awning and turn on the lights :-)

I've been looking for JaycoForum stickers too, none yet.

Safe travels my friend,
Doug
