Chicago > Colorado via I80

Hi Gang, we are planning a 2 week adventure in our MH the last part of July. Gonna take 2-3 days for travel each way via I80 and the rest exploring the Telluride, Silverton & Durango areas. Already looking at route and attractions, but any particular places/camping/attractions that are 'must sees' (ghost towns, natural wonders, mines, UFO crash sites... ) via our route and region? There are 4 of us (two mid/late teen kids & wife) so no need for kiddie stuff. Unless it is really cool and takes me back to the 70s when I was camping as a kid!

Bar D Show is fantastic old school cowboy fun. BAR D Chuckwagon | Durango Colorado Family Entertainment

Obviously the million dollar highway between Durango, Silverton and Ouray. Mesa Verde, raft trip down the Animus River, Durango Silverton Train among others.

Where are you staying in Durango? Not much to see along I 80, could stop and take in Pikes Peak near Colorado Springs, Royal Gorge near Canyon City.

Make sure you have reservations in Colorado, that's a very busy time and especially with a larger MH sites will be limited.

Good Luck !

Waggs999 has some great suggestions! We made that trip several years ago. We camped in Ridgeway, Colorado at the state park and left our travel trailer there...then drove the scenic route 145 to Cortes, across to Durango and then route 550 back to Ridgeway. Check out this link just so you know about 550:
Million Dollar Highway
Amazing views but we were happy we weren't pulling our travel trailer on Rt. 550...Route 145 was fine. Maybe others have a different view on this...
We are heading out that way again this fall...love Colorado...but make your reservations early! Have fun!

We spent 2 weeks in Colorado last summer. One place we stopped, that was a last minute was Mesa Verde (Cave dwellings) in the Southwest corner. We did the tour for one of the caves and our kids (12 and 10) really enjoyed it, as did we. It was a lot more interesting than we were expecting.

Also, if you are any where near Colorado Springs, they have a great Zoo call Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and they have a Giraffe feeding experience and also an Elephant feeding experience. DW emptied my wallet there..... There is a state park right by it that is very nice.

No reason to drop down to take I 70. I 80 is a good road once out of Illinois. Get to see lots of corn on the way

Along I-80 near Kearny Nebraska is a place called Pioneer Village. A great experience and nostalgic look at this country's technological change.

80 is cool. Do you like trains? The largest switching yard is in North Platte NE Google Bailey Yard.South AmanaIA has an old timey town and sells native sausages and has a nice brew pub

Home - Amana Convention and Vistors Bureau

The North Platte River takes you back in history to Gold Rush days

Lucy's Place Sedgwick CO is an eclectic diner with views of.... range. not a tree.Great food and full of locals.

I haven't been to Cheyenne MT Zoo but my grown daughter was there two months ago and loved it.
