Coastal NC/OBX suggestions pls..

Looking for some recommendations for campground (that you have actually been to) in the coastal NC or OBX area. We're planning our summer trips and for our end of summer trip would like to stay in this general area. Any suggestions??

I can only comment on where I have stayed. We like to travel to Ocracoke Island, NC. There are three campgrounds available on the island. One is a state park and two are private. We usually stay at the Beachcomber Campground although we have stayed at Teeter's Campground too. On the island, there are no nationwide chain stores, not even a 7-11. Everything is Mom and Pop shops. We just bring out bikes and ride them anywhere on the island we want to go. Bring a 4X4 to drive on the beach, you just need a permit that can be obtained there.

I recommend Holiday travel park @ Emerald Isle, Camp Hatteras or Ocean Waves on the OBX.

Ocean waves was nice, will go again, last day there we had to wade to the bath Ouse, but area had tons of rain that week, so there was tons of flooding everywhere. Loved OBX

Actually stayed at Camp Hatteras about 1 month ago. It was a nice campground. We rented one of the premium sites that puts you closer to the water. Their facility covers both the beach side of of Hwy 12 S and the sound side. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Personally, when we go back we will stay on Ocracoke. Didn't camp on Ocracoke but when we visited we both loved the charm of the village. Enjoy your trip!

There is a big KOA and another campground, can't think of the name in the Waves/Salvo area on Hatteras island that we pass on the way to the house we rent in Salvo. Both of these are on the ocean side of Rt. 12.

If you are a member of Passport America (PPA) there is a PPA park at Avon named Sands of Time. It is not on the beach and has limited amenities but it was clean and quiet when I stayed there a few years ago. Mostly good/average reviews

We've stayed at Camp Hatteras 2 times so far once back in 2010 and again in 2012 both times were in the 3 week of Aug. and I could not be more satisfied with the camp ground, they were very nice to deal with and seem to keep it clean. when we were there it was empty for the most part. We tried to reserve a premium but we were to late in making reservations. but when we gat there DW asked if anything opened up and it did so they put us into it. We plan on going back maybe over the kids spring break in late March. If not than it will be next summer as we made our Disney plans for this summer.

We stayed here a few summers ago and enjoyed ourselves. It's on the south side of Hatteras on the sound side just a couple of miles from the ferry that takes you over to Okracoke. http://thefriscowoodscampground.com/ When people tell me the east coast doesn't know what a sunset is I refer them too these pics. LOL
