Colonial Williamsburg/DC 2019

We are interested in making this trip next year. We are thinking about. 15 day trip including drive time from SE Kansas. Was looking for campgrounds in both areas. Looking for advice.

Just returned from a week at Colonial Williamsburg. Recommend you avoid Williamsburg RV Resort (Thousand Trails). Found it to be disappointing after many good Thousand Trails experiences. People are very nice, but the campground is small, run down, shabby, spaces are extremely cramped in most cases, and I don't think there's a level space in the entire park. Plus it may be hard to get a reservation there, because it looks like it's 90% seasonal (OK, 75%).

Location is good. 15 minutes from the Colonial Williamsburg visitor center parking lot, right off I-64. Fairly quiet, too.

Good luck!

Roger

Chippokes state park is nice. B loop. It's on the other side of the James River a but short ferry ride solves that. Jamestown, Yorktown and Williamsburg (the historic triangle) are all nearby.

If you are going to split time, Cherry Hill Park in DC can be considered. It is very much an RV Park rather than a campground which is tough to avoid being so close to the city but it is well maintained and positioned well for trips to/from the city via the metro.

I 2nd Cherry Hill. They have a bus that picks you up at the park and takes you over to the metro to get into the city.

I highly recommend the air & space museum out at Dulles. I went there yesterday and it is MUCH better than the museum downtown. Just wish I was camping while I’m here...camping in a Marriot for 2 more weeks!

And I second the Dulles Air and Space Museum. Ten times better than the one in the city. A space shuttle and an SR-71 Blackbird both at arms length distance from you. Probably 70 other aircraft there too but those two were the most impactful to me.

I third that.

There's more than you can see in a day. Admission is free, but they charge for parking. We were there a couple of years ago, just didn't have time & energy for the commercial aviation wing where you'll find a Concorde. The Enola Gay B29 is there.

The Williamsburg KOA is very nice. We choose to stay there when visiting the area.

I second the comment about the 1000 Trails park down there. Old. Ugly. Too many cabins and permanents, but I guess that's what the club is for. We will not go back there.

We did Williamsburg & DC last September for two weeks. I second the recommendation for Chippokes Plantation at Williamsburg. You have to take a car ferry every day to cross the river, and that became one of the highlights. It’s free, about a ten minute trip (it’s every 30 minutes, and it’s a commuter ferry so the line can get long at commute hours—- we are late risers so we usually missed the rush), and once the cars are all aboard and you start moving you can get out and walk around. It was fun, there were Bald Eagles soaring around, kids loved it. You can do Jamestown and Williamsburg easily from Chippokes.

We did Pohick Bay for DC. We drove about 20 minutes to a metro station and then railed in to Arlington and DC. There are probably closer campgrounds to DC, but we wanted to be close to Mount Vernon, which was one of the highlights of our trip.

We have also stayed at the Williamsburg KOA and found it to be nice.

If you have access to military bases there is a campground at the Yorktown Annex that is just a couple of miles from Williamsburg. $35 for FHU, concrete site.

We cancelled our Williamsburg trip due to weather but we were booked at the park below. It seems to get good reviews.

I have also camped at Newport News Park. It's a nice older city park not far from 64. You have to pick your sites as some are unlevel.
