Colorado Highway 14

Returning to Calif. from Custer State Park a few days after Labor Day. I'm curious about the driving experience on Colorado Highway 14 from Fort Collins to Steamboat Springs.

Looks to be a scenic route with many campgrounds and the road looks good on google maps.

TIA,
Steve

I have made this drive many times pulling a trailer. It’s a steep narrow winding two lane road with 2 10,000+ ft. passes (Cameron and Rabbit Ears). If you are in a hurry don’t go this way because the speed limit is 45 much of the way. If you aren’t in a hurry it is a gorgeous drive along the Poudre Canyon then down into North Park and on up to Steamboat.

Cars are always in a hurry and like to ride your ass but there are several pullouts where you can pull over and let them by. There are several places you can pull over and take a break and take in the view. Moose sightings are very common on Cameron Pass in the morning and evening.

I don’t know if you are pulling a trailer or driving a motor home but there are several steep long descents so you need to make sure to use a low gear and keep your speed under control or you will burn your brakes up. I would not recommend this drive with an undersized under powered tow vehicle.

However if you have the proper equipment and keep your speed under control then it is an amazing drive.

Roughly a month ago we drove C-14 from Sterling, CO to the junction with US-40 east of Steamboat. On the north side of Ft.Collins, there is some road construction that was a bit of a PIA. Other than that, it was very nice.

We stayed (boondocking) a couple of nights at Dutch George campground.

Pulling a JayFeather 7 18RBM with a Tacoma V6. I haven't experienced problems climbing various passes in the Sierras. Tekonsha brake controller and not in a hurry.

Thanks for your replies,

Steve
