Colter Bay or other area campgrounds

I'm trying to plan for a trip to Yellowstone next summer and had a question about Colter Bay and other area campgrounds.

It's really simple

So far my wife and I have always stayed at places that took reservations. Looking at CB and other area campgrounds they don't take reservations and their web sites say that they usually fill up between 4 and 9 PM.

Does anyone have experience with that? Is it an accurate assessment? We live within 8 hours or so of that area so it's not out of line at all for us to leave in time to hit the early end of that time frame.

We also haven't camped without electric yet. I know I can throw the generator in the back of the truck and we plan on adding solar to keep the batteries charged but at least for now we'd like to stick with a spot that at least has electric available.

Any hints, tips, or suggestions for us that are relatively new to the TT experience in this regard will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Colter bay has two campgrounds. The smaller one with full hook ups is by reservation only. Try it you will like it. Been staying there for 30 years about every three years. The other one, which is at same location is first come first serve. No hook ups and they pack them in. ( there are actually about twelve sites that have electric only)
Enjoy the journey
