Heading there with our RV and Dogs this year. Anyone been there? Any advice or suggestions?

Thanks

It sounds like this your first.... first trip to WDW or first time at Ft. Wilderness or first time with your dog?

Hi, sorry I wasn't more specific. We've been to Disney numerous times but we've always flown. So, first time with the RV to DFW with our 2 schnoodles.

As far as the RV side. They were friendly and quick to process us at the front gate. If you aren't taking a golf cart you may want to rent one depending on where you are staying. The campground is big. They have buses but we enjoyed riding our golf cart around. They should give you a list of things that are going on at the campground upon arrival.

Do you have to book there years in advance?
Or can you just wing it certain times of the year.

Hi, We have never gone to Disney with our RV but I would say months ahead would be good, not years. Pretty much true for most of the Disney Resorts. Depends on whether or not it's during a peak visiting time.

Great place to camp and visit. Take plenty of money or plastic. It will be a trip you will cherish

The bride and I went in the fall of '14 and loved it. The wiener dog did too. A cart or bicycle would be handy but we survived without either. Getting from the CG to the kingdom is a snap (take the boat). Other destinations a bit more of a chore (bus). Getting to the Boardwalk was a pain (2 busses).
The CG is like all Disney properties, immaculate and the mouse likes the color green ($$$) but he will show you a great time.

Ft. Wilderness has 'pet loops' and you'll probably be in one of those along with lots of other RVers traveling with their pets.

The golf carts are handy and Disney's are $$. You must get your request in EARLY for golf carts; they often run out of them. If you check the internet, you'll find that there are other options.

Don't forget the boat launch at The Fort. The boat is a quick way to Disney's Wilderness Lodge, the Magic Kingdom, Monorail, and the monorail resorts and their restaurants. And from the beach you can see the Electrical Water Pageant each night and see Wishes fireworks.

The site we were in was nestled in the trees. We got situated on the narrow pad with enough room for the slide, but we failed to check for adequate room for the awning. We could, and did, run that out part way. By the end of our stay, we collected a TON of debris from the Cypress(?) trees on the TV and TT.

The new Magic Bands were awesome! We used them for everything from FastPasses to .... EVERYTHING!

I just saw Redhorse1 comment: We took 1 bus to Hollywood Studios and then the boat from the Studios to Boardwalk or the back entrance to EPCOT. Sometimes the journey is part of the fun.

So excited we leave for the fort in about a month. Anyone know how or when we can figure out what loop we are in?

The family will be there in 3 weeks, marking off the days now. The wife and I have a wilderness home rented and will be flying in. The daughter and SIL will be towing their rig (he's young) and our sites will be in walking distance. We also have a golf cart rented for the week as well. We have been there several times and I consider us a "veterans". We prefer to take the boats across from the CG, very relaxing ride.

The suggestions made are all good ones, btw.

We've gone to Fort Wilderness once and I hated it. Spent so much time in the parks, I didn't get to enjoy the campground or the camping!!

I say that in jest, as the DW runs us ragged there. It is probably the nicest, most well kept and biggest campground I've ever been in. I keep telling DW that I want to go back so we can enjoy camping there.

I believe there is a process for you to request a specific loop and maybe a specific site. As far as I know, they try to honor those requests BUT, there really is no way to know before you arrive and actually check in.

Its best to call ahead and let the fort know what size your RV is so they can place you on a site that will fit. I don't think there is a bad site at the fort, we like the 1400 loop which is a premium loop, its a few minute walk to the main pool and the nightly campfire and outdoor movie. If you want more info check out Camping at Disney World | The DIS Disney Discussion Forums - DISboards.com, it is full of information from veterans that have camped there for many years. Our drive is to long so we leave the RV at home and fly down and rent an RV from a local company that delivers and sets up everything. When we are done its leave the keys and take the Disney bus back to the airport. This is the only way we will do Disney, I hate being cooped up in a hotel room.

The last time we went, we booked through AAA. They were great, and saved is 1,800.00, got us free park hopper passes, and 2 extra days free. They said that they can get those deals, as they book more Disney vacations than anybody else.

Transportation is everywhere there at the campground, and we never had any trouble getting around. Book early for the pet loops!

Have fun!

The AAA discount was good while it lasted, Disney broke off the relationship so there are no more discounts on campsites through AAA.

If you haven't already made your reservations I recommend using a Travel Agent that specializes in DISNEY, doesn't cost you any additional, Mickey pays them.

Pets can be found in every loop depending on the demand.
