East coast camping

We are taking the kids to the coast this summer somewhere between Virginia beach and myrtle beach and are looking for suggestions for campgrounds in the area.

Myrtle Beach Travel Park

Hey Cavi,

My family loves the Myrtle Beach Travel Park. It is a huge campground right on the ocean. The sites are a fair size with a hard packed sand surface to park on and grass to relax on. The main area is a wide open parking lot style campground so there is very little in the way of shade but each site comes with a shelter and a picnic table and the Ocean breeze helps keep things cool.

The biggest draw for us is location. Being on the water is awesome. We normally get up and play in the ocean in the morning and then lounge by one of the pools in the afternoon. The campground is situated pretty much equidistant from North and South Myrtle Beach so in less then 20 minutes you can be at any of the attractions you might want to visit. The site is very clean, the washrooms are excellent. They have on site shopping and dining opportunities. There are daily events at the park for kids, many of them focused around the pool. Adult activities are mostly things like fitness classes.

We have been three times and love it enough that we are probably returning there again this year. If you have the option, the last two weeks of August are an amazing time to go since local schools are in, the crowds are greatly reduced. We are often the only RV in our row. As a fellow Canuck... We have come to love the fact that our kids don't go to school until after Labour Day. We always try and go South at that time. On our way back we always plan a stop in Pennsylvania to take advantage of Tax Free back to school Outlet Shopping.

We liked the Myrtle Beach KOA. We stayed a week. It's about a 5-block walk to the beach, but it's very nice with large sites and is in a good location.

The family and I enjoy going to the Outer Banks, NC every year. Camp Hatteras is one of our favorite places. Relaxing campground (no shade though) with sites on the Ocean & Sound side.

I would highly recommend Cedar Point CG on the Crystal Coast, NC. The beaches are fabulous, not too crowded, and so much to do and explore in the area. It's a hidden jewel.
The campground is small, with big sites and a 10 min drive to the beach.

We stayed at Ocean Lakes in Myrtle last year. It is a nice campground, but be prepared. It is it's own city, my 11 yo son was impressed by the 5 trash trucks in the maintenance area. It is not only campsites but houses also, they claim something like 35,000 people in the campground at any time. We looked into renting a golf cart but didn't, the kid at the rental said they have something like 1500 carts for rent. You definitely need bikes or a golf cart to get around. The waterpark is new and is very nice, but very crowded at times. Also be prepared for the golf cart cruising, in 7 years of camping all over the country we had never seen anything like it. People were cruising the ocean side road with their golf carts, it went for a couple of hours and the golf carts stretched as far as you could see. It all ended promptly at quiet time. We also stayed at First State Park campground in Virginia Beach and Camp Hatteras in the Outer Banks, both were nice also.

Ditto. We've also stayed at Oceanwaves and like it better because it does have some shady spots. Not as much to do on Hatteras as there is in Myrtle, but it also makes for a lot less people, which is why we prefer it.

On second thought. Hatteras is terrible! You should all go to Myrtle. [emoji1]
