Favorite Colorado Campgrounds

Just got back from a big trip through Colorado with our new (first tt). A few really pleasant finds: the good citizens of Denver saw fit so set aside a big swatch of high prairie right in the middle of their fair city as a state park: "Cherry Creek State Park" in downtown Denver. Full hookups, swimming beach, showers, laundry, internet, lots of space between sites, very friendly office staff, all for *much* cheaper than RV parks in the area.

Also, San Luis Reservoir State Park, just outside of (8 miles) the Great Sand Dunes national park. At first we were bummed that we couldn't get a site *in* the National Park, but when we got to the State Park, wow. Electrical hookups, lots of space between sites, breathtaking desert location, beautiful view of the dunes. And no bears (apparently a problem at the NP).

If you're in south-eastern CO, the John Martin Reservoir State Park was really pretty, and almost empty.

In terms of commercial RV parks, we stayed in two and would recommend one: Mesa Verde RV Resort, just a mile away from the park entrance. Bathrooms immaculate, nice pool, laundry, nice staff, and roomier than many RV parks we saw. Much less pricey than the RV park where we stayed in Estes Park.

My wife wants me to suggest, too, that if you're in the Ft. Collins area you should look up a "Spoons" restaurant (local chain, I guess). Outstanding soups and sandwiches.

We love hitting up some of those cafe/diner/other regional restaurants while traveling! Thanks for the recommendation. Did you get a chance to write up short review of those cg's on RvParkReviews?

Good to know. Colorado is our old stomping ground. We are actually making a trip to Estes Park in a couple weeks. Staying at jellystone rv park, heh heh.
