Florida Campgrounds
Hey guys,
So we’re booked to go to Fort Wilderness exactly one year from today. In going over the finances for the trip it makes us wonder where else in Florida we could go that has a nice facility like the Fort but not necessarily tied to an amusement park.
We’re going back next year to escape the NJ winter blues and get some warmth. We don’t necessarily have to do it at the house of mouse in Orlando. Can anybody recommend a beautiful campground, within 1/2 hour to a nice beach, that’s not much further south then Orlando? I’m really not looking to do three days of driving, so Orlando is sorta my abstract stopping point.
Thanks !

I personally have not been there, but my son and DIL have been and are going again in June to TOP SAIL. It’s on the panhandle on the Gulf Coast. Near a Fort Walden Beach. They Love It.

There are lots of "nice" campgrounds, but nothing that compares to the FORT. The park we're in, Citrus Valley, is one of the better ones, but still 1- 1 1/2 hrs from the beach.

I stayed a few days at Tropical Palms in Kissimmee while we were wating for our reservation at the Fort to open up. Campground was clean and the pool was nice. Not much else to do there so you would need to take alot of day trips to keep from getting board if staying more then a few days.

We are booked for several days after our Fort Wilderness trip this summer at the KOA in St. Augustine before we head back north again. We've never stayed at that KOA before but we love St. Augustine.
I'll let you know what we think of the campground itself after our stay.

Thanks let me know. I’m thinking it’s going to be Fort or bust but I figured I’d ask anyway.

There are many many State Parks in Fl. that are far from resorts but we prefer them to the Fort. Check them out.

TH Stone State Park on the St Joseph Peninsula
https://www.floridastateparks.org/park/St-Joseph
West of Apalachicola. I've read its the best beach in America
Book Very Early.. it is a wildly popular park
If you want to see the serene side of Orlando, just north is Wekiva Springs State Park.. Swim in the springs.. no beach.. great canoeing and kayaking
Or any of the North Florida Spring parks. Juniper Springs is another beauty.

Nice park, but sites are a little tight. They have/had a bus $ you could take to go into the Historic area and then you can get a trolley shuttle $ down there. Saves driving and parking.

Thanks. If you don't mind me asking, what is the best way in there from I-95? I've been through there many times off of 16 from the Camping World exit. But, I don't really want to tow down through town and across the bridge. Is it possible to come in from the south side on A1A off of 95?

That's how we've gone in. IIRC 95 to 206.

You won't find anything like the Fort, but I'll second St. Augustine, FL, lots of nice campgrounds very close to the beach. We like North Beach Camp. There's plenty to do in and around St. Augustine. Hannah Abby Park in Jacksonville is nice too. St. Augustine and Jacksonville won't be as warm as Orlando, but definitely better than NJ.
We haven't been to a Florida State Park that we didn't like, except maybe Top Sail. It used to be a Public Park and definitely doesn't feel like a state park. It would be a good idea to call well in advance of your trip. Florida has a tendency to get crowded in the winter.
