Grand Canyon

Anyone had any experience with Grand Canyon camping, not to concerned with Full Hook ups, but want water and electric. Trailer Village looks rather "tight" anything else anyone had experiences with. Looking in March 2017. Thanks

We stayed at Trailer Village years ago with a large class A motorhome and a car in tow. We had no problems getting in and out.

Heard Trailer Village is nice but never stayed there.
Last month stayed at Grand Canyon Railway RV Park in Williams. The advantage to that is you walk across the street to the train that takes you to the GC. We rode in the refurbished 1923 coach car and it was a real treat. Had plenty of time to walk around or ride the shuttle bus to different spots. Also liked the old west gunfight, the train robbery, and the walk into Williams. At the park they have a pet boarding kennel ($) for your pet, while you ride the train to the GC.

Happy RVing,
Jeff

Stayed at Trailer Village over the weekend. IMO not too tight. We stayed at the very back of park. .5 mile walk to Mather Point. Easy short walk to market also.

I visited the Grand Canyon 2 years ago and stayed at the Ten-X campground, which is four miles from the south entrance.

It is dry camping, but I have a generator and solar.

Honestly, Ten-X had some of the biggest pull throughs I have ever seen. You could fit a 45 class A no problem. And cheap too as its in a national forest, as I recall, 10 bucks.

Why pay Xanterra 50 bucks a night to be crammed in like sardines????

Friends, check out Ten-X if you are in the area. You will not be disappointed.

We just stayed there for 3 nights in May and it was nice. I would highly recommend it but you do need reservations ahead of time like someone already stated.

What length are you? We stayed in Mather.. The sites are well dispersed. We could run the genny am and pm. It's dry camping but with our 4 day stay and two people we did not exceed our grey and black water tank.. We were right next to one of the restrooms.
Mather IMO is more attractive than Trailer.. both are on the bus line and easy to get to the store..

For the first time in my life if I forgot something re food it was a five minute walk. Store is 30 minutes away at home
Reserve early.

Kim,
I see Mather is limited to 30ft. Is that total tow vehicle and trailer length? Or do they let you unhitch after parking so they will let a 30ft trailer in?

Our trailer is 20 feet . Our truck is 18.. There was another 30 feet left over. This was an ADA site with a max length of 27 ( its longer but there is a curve as it is drive through)

The numbers are for camping unit length excluding vehicle

Campsite Map V2 - MATHER CAMPGROUND, AZ - Recreation.gov

I did not seek out all of them but they seem to cluster at 27.feet

The grand canyon is one of the last places I still go camping where I never take the trailer... well not yet anyway. I usually leave my car at the top, and take one of the south rim trails all the way down to the river, which takes a few days each direction. This thread reminded me that I have to get in my permit for next year. It's hard enough finding a good RV spot, but nearly impossible to get a back country permit if you don't do it 8 months in advance.

There is a nice state park just north of I40 and the exit to the grand canyon.Kaibab State park not sure if it would be open in March. There is lots of free camping on Federal land.Just N of the 40 cross small bridge turn right on forest road.Lots of room for big campers.

Well it doesn't take a few days each way but you certainly can...Indian Garden?

Have you traversed across to the North Rim and back?

Years ago we did.. but stayed at Phantom Ranch.

This is the trail we did last time, it did take us almost 3 days to get to the bottom, 2 nights in backpacking tents each direction, but I just slept under the stars. 60 lb packs slowed us down a bit... 3 of us. We saw more rattlesnakes than people...beautiful hike. Some scary spots with heavy packs. We took more food than we needed, but figured it would be better to go slow and eat plenty, than take risks. If I do this trail again, I'll definitely go lighter.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Bass_Trail

We're all ex-military and we trained pretty hard for this hike, starting about 6 months before we did it. One of the most intense hikes I've done in my life honestly, but worth every minute. The first night we stayed in a cabin that Roosevelt built, I'm in the log book.. the trail down from that point is pretty insane... we didn't see anyone past the cabin, for the next couple days. You really need to be in the best shape of your life, seriously.

In follow up Trailer Village is awesome. Great trip, water heater decided not to work so wish they had showers in area, only "what if". Highly recommend

Mather has well spaced campsites so I assume you are talking about suitability for larger units.. Having a smaller unit we had a lot of room even with the TV
