Gulf Waters RV Resort, Port Aransas, TX

Had a great long season opener/post-tax-season vacation last weekend. The park was absolutely fabulous. Staff was great, spots were large and clean, and when the boardwalk is done, beach access will be excellent! Only complaint was that there was a lot of seaweed on the beach... But we did find a buoy!

Would it help if I told you there was tons of seaweed, so using the beach was a bit difficult? Or that the water was too cold to swim?

Sorry, that's all I got. The weather was beautiful (except for the rain on the way down that was just enough to make a mess of my truck and trailer), the park was awesome, the drive was good (uneventful); it just doesn't get much better than that!

There are certain times of the year the seaweed is pretty thick. Nueces county used to use a maintainer years ago to clean up the beach a bit but the water would be full of it. We went down for sprint break last month and the weather was miserable and the water was cold but it didn't seem to bother my kids. Did you go down 123/181?

That's how its been the last couple of times I've been down there too. I'm thinking of trying out Fishers of Men RV park in Rockport at some point. I don't know the owner personally, but he's from my AO and part of the local CCA. Don't know anything about the park specifically, but there are some darn good restaurants, i.e. Charlotte Plummers!!

We tried a new route down there, turned right in Stockdale, went through Floresville, and on down I-37. I will NEVER take that route again. It was bumpy and added about 40 miles to the trek (causing me to stop for gas in Corpus) and I-37 is certainly nothing to write home about.

We came home up 37, turned onto 359 in Mathis, and left on 181 in Skidmore to 123 in Karnes City. The only part of the drive that was bad was 123 between Karnes City and Stockdale; the road is worn almost down to the dirt through there. Still, it was better than the other way... The strong tail wind didn't hurt either!

Let me know how it goes, I've been thinking of making a trip out to Rockport. DW likes the beach though, and from what I gather, RP is more of a fishing town than a beach bum hangout.

That's pretty accurate. RP does have a city maintained beach park. The last time I was there the seaweed wasn't an issue. You do have to pay to access the park, but it is nice.

We stayed at the "On the Beach RV" in Port Aransas a couple years ago and found the park really nice.

It looks like my wife and I were in Port Aransas that same week end. We were only using the Ridgeline, not camping.

But we're planning a return trip soon, looking to stay off access road #2. Boondocking as soon as we get our generator.

I'd love to boondock out on the beach, but DW doesn't want to get all that sand in the trailer... Oh well, some day I'll convince her! We don't have a genny yet anyway...

There were plenty of folks out there doing it that weekend though, and looked to be having a blast out there. We drove along the beach from AR 2 all the way to AR 1A, in my 2WD GMC Sierra ... with the traction control and stability control ON most of the way ... it was kinda scary at some points, I almost got us stuck at least a half-dozen times! Traction control wouldn't let me spin the rears to get some momentum going! Good thing there were plenty of 4X4s out there that coulda pulled me out!

Camper_bob.....Mary and I spent a week last October in the same park. It is an oasis and beautiful. Sure enjoyed the access to the beach and yes, there was plenty of seaweed.
Thanks for posting and helping us relive a great week.

I was stationed in Corpus Christi from 1977 to 1979. Been looking forward to getting back down there for a vacation since then. I am sure many things have changed in the area since that time.
