Hatteras NC trip

we are planning a vacation to Hatteras NC June 20-24 we are staying at Hatteras Sands Campground basically at the end of hwy 12. Has anyone made the trip down Hwy 12. Is there anything we should be aware of or any good stops along the way. Thanks for all replies in advance. June is a loong way away it seems.

Although we usually stay in Rodanth/Waves we make the trip down NC12 at least once or twice a year. In June traffic will be heavy and the speed traps will be out. There will be pedestrians and golf carts all over the place so be careful. Check the weather and monitor the projected wind speeds. You don't mention the type of rig you are driving but regardless the winds going over the Oregon Inlet Bridge can blow you around.

Along the drive there are numerous places to pull over and enjoy the scenery. The wind surfers with the colorful sails are a photo waiting to be taken. One of our favorite dining establishments is the Oceanas Bistro in Avon (home).

Stock the fridge and pantry before hitting NC 12. Along NC 12 there is one Food Lion grocery store and that is it except for the small quick stops. It is a time consuming trip back to Kitty Hawk if you need something. There is an ACE Hardware store in Avon but there is nothing that resembles a Walmart along NC12.

Not sure what your route getting there is going to be but if you go through Grandy NC stop at the Grandy Farm Market (https://www.grandysfarmmarket.com/) and stock up on the fresh fruits and veggies. You can also stop at the Weeping Radish (https://www.weepingradish.com/) to pick up some brew and have lunch.

Enjoy the trip, we always do if the weather cooperates.

We enjoy Hatteras Sands and go there routinely. Always a good time. Go ahead and get an NPS Off Road permit to drive and park on beach for beach time. A few pics from a recent trip attached.

And a few pics of the beach, if you haven't been.

Thank you for the responses. Thermalfrost I see you are on the ferry. Did you take it across to the island? If so how much and do they allow 38ft 5th wheels.

Hatteras to Ocracoke ferry is free. You can put a fifth wheel on one with no problem. Ferry crew will guide you on and off. Ferry from Ocracoke to either Swan Quarter or Cedar Island is $45 one way up to 65'. You'll need to make reservations if running from Ocracoke to Swan Quarter or Cedar Island via NC DOT FERRY Division web site. Hatteras to Ocracoke, you just get in line and wait your turn. Wait time may vary depending on the time of day.

It's worth the trip to Ocracoke to eat at Howards. Will be there 10 days in July

I travel from Washington NC on Hwy 264 catching the ferry from Swan Quarter to Ocracoke, then Ocracoke to Hatteras. The ferry in Hatteras is about a mile from Ocean Sands. May not be as fast as driving around and down Hwy 12, but a lot more relaxing and enjoyable. Keep in mind on a windy day you may get some salt spray, but nothing that can't be washed off.

100% yes. Ocracoke is amazing Howard's is cool. If you get the chance the flying Mellon is amazing food and a bit more upscale. Eduardo's is a Mexican food truck with picnic tables. The best Mexican food EVER! jolly Rodger at sunset is beautiful. We always spend 2 days on the island.
