As 201822j said, head South. Plan on taking I-10, not I-40.
We used to live in MI and have friends and family there. We have had to make a couple of winter trips back there and stayed on I-10 until directly south of MI. A longer drive, but a safer one.
Whatever route you take, do pay attention to the weather forecasts and be safe.
